Title: Midsummer..whats/was for dinner?
Post by Redd on Jun 21st, 2008 at 8:37pm
Grilled steaks, marinated in soy sauce, Lee and Perins, 1/4 tsp liq. smoke, some red wine vinegar, some seasoned salt and garlic. Grilled garlic bread. Salad tossed with romaine heart lettuce, roasted garlic, basil, Pleasoning seasoning (it's a local thing) EVOO and balsomic vinegar, bacon and moz. cheese and grape tomatoes and scallions and some sesame stick snacks crushed.

My "second" son (Austin, one of Dyl's friends) was here for dinner tonight and he loves to come for dinner. I love just sitting back and listening to the 3 of them break out in song while doing dishes and putting right the kitchen. Starts with Monty Python's "Lovely bunch of coconuts" and then transitioning into a rendition of the plague scene fron the Holy Grail, then all of a sudden they cut to "Phantom of the Opera" tunes. A tenor, a baratone and a soprano all joyusly singing and having a hell-of-a good time.

Now the 3 of them are off to a Saturday night summer movie fest with their friends and here I sit alone with a computer...sad really.

Ok..I'm officially pathethic. But with a full belly...

Grilled salmon (alder, oak and maple charcoal--makes a difference, you know?) a loaf of crusty bread with olive oil for dipping, and a salad with new lettuce.

I'm going to throw a few fresh basil leaves in with the salad.  We've got a lot of it around right now.

See, I had a theory this year.

We planted our tomato plants in pots, and I put a bunch of basil plants in with them.  Partly because--tomato, basil--you know.  But also because I thought that just maybe the odor of the basil might keep off the tomato hornworms.  So far, no hornworms.  But I'm not ready to proclaim victory over the big greenies yet, 'cause the tomatoes are just flowering at this point.

Sorry for the diversion.  Back to your regularly scheduled thread.

Best,

George

Left over cornbread (left to get dry overnight) is terrific with honey and warm milk as a breakfast Ray...my kids love it.  They will bake a loaf just to have in the mornings.

They like cooking, and they always bake 2x what they know we will eat for dinner to have at breakfast.  And cost effective too.  Syrup is just as good as honey too.

Spent the whole day at the beach and came home tired and needing to bathe a wet, sandy pup! Lisa went out for dinner. Pizza Hut did nicely!

I have 47 more days to answer that question. I had Shrimp, Tomatoes, Garlic, Yellow Zuchs and Linguini with a light sauce for the first night of Summer though.

Top all that off with a huge helping of hugs (from us all) and I think you have a well rounded meal there Linda.

That is when Midsummer comes around. I'm not giving up the first half of Summer Trike riding already.
You can if you want Brew. For me the fun has just started.

I hate all of you.  Hate, loath, and poop on a stick!  I'm but a poor, unloved Aussie stuck in mid-winter (night-time temp plunging to 55f) and I've only a nail for a blanket.  I'd kill just for a bowl of punkin soup and probably eat the bowl into the bargain.

Regardless, I can dream about summer and some of her interesting meals.

As a side dish to hot chilli, put rough-cut cucumber into a mix of natural yoghurt, lemon, garlic and finely-chopped mint.  Sprinkle with paprika.

Toss some mango chutney through the coleslaw. Sprinkle with lemon pepper.

Your bestest-ever tomato soup. Serve it chilled, including ice-cubes, topped with mint and lemon zest.

It's only dreams such as these will keep me alive until morning, the solstice being upon us, and if I should freeze before I wake....

Ya know, I had a really good salad yesterday with pan grilled chicken, lettuce, arugula, radicchio, frisee, chives, red bell peppers, olive oil & red wine vinegar... YUM!

I want to go to Tempura House and get some more platefuls of Hibachi Shrimp/Fish too!

I just had a bowl of steel cut oats & am now snaking on some white cheddar cheese curds.

I love food! :)

Yesterday,

An awesome Italian sausage on a bun w/peppers and onions at the Milwaukee Mile Nascar race at state fair park.

Today I'm thinking its "Clean out the fridge" day. I'm hoping that the only thing that is in the fridge is beer! ;)

I was going to grill a london broil yesterday but the grill wouldn't light.  Looks like a dam squirrel chewed through the hose coming from the propane tank.  Hope the SOB died of propane poisoning

Looking forward to the cheese Danish this evening when I get to the market. Later I plan to find something to thaw out. Yum.

Now that was funny ;D

It's not funny!! Our sweet golden retreiver puppy did the same thing and it took months to get a new hose. It was a real nuisance.Good luck!!

It's ok! It just went down as one of the top 10 bad puppy things for the year. Once the grill was fixed we really appreciated it!

Steak marinated for two days in Jamaican Jerk sauce, Hamburgers perfectly seasoned with my favorite cajun spices, skewers of onion, zucchini, yellow squash and mushrooms, roasted corn on the cob and home made mini pecan pies with butter crust, topped off with peppercini peppers and a great big glass of sweet tea.

Drool!

Let's see now...

Friday: ham-broccoli quiche and salad.

Saturday: chicken in honey sauce with noodles and fried corn and tomato-cucumber-lettuce salad. We had rhubard pie with vanilla dressing for dessert.

Because we visited my mom's childhood home, there was also steamed fish, grilled fish, grilled chicken, salad, rye bread (made by my uncle, who is 74).

Sunday: Salmon pasta with tomato-cucumber-iceberg lettuce salad. We had papaya quark for dessert.

Everything was yummy. But then again, I'm was the chef at the summer cottage... ;)
