She had her first operation Wednesday morning and it went wonderfully.......instead of 4 to 6 hours, it only took 2 hours, 45 minutes!! Because the scoliosis pulled her right hip up higher on the left side, the doc was able to go in lower above the hip on the right, avoiding the coccyx, (which they usually have to go through and which is at higher risk for infection)
They did the discectomies, placed artificial parts in and filled the cavities with material that developes into bone, thus the fusion.
The foot that has drop foot now has a brace holding her foot up...it wraps around her ankle and shin and has a flat part that fits under the foot, like the sole of a shoe, that holds the foot up in place. She will have some kind of lift placed in her shoe after the next operation, since her one leg will be about three inches longer than the other.
Once physical therapy had her up and walking with her walker, she progressed so fast that she came home today. She's still a fall risk, she still has a long and short leg that she limps along with, but she's on her way to full correction.
The discectomy alone straightened her curve out by 20%. Even the doc was a little surprised that he could get that much, but he's such a wonderful surgeon. He specializes in spine disorders and deformaties. He was even prouder that he performed one of only three (that he was acquainted with) such surgeries that bypassed going in thru the coccyx.
She came home today. Everything was more successful than expected and done in less time.
Once again, the Clusterheads pulled together in prayer, vibes and whatever else they do, and once again we have a great outcome.
