Title: Scared
Post by jmc1106 on Oct 22nd, 2003, 9:46am
Please somebody smack me, and tell me it's not a huge deal if the dr. wants to have a "head CT" done. Is that the same as a Cat Scan? It's just been three weeks, and I'm already so down about this. I don't know how you guys with the chronic CH's do it!

sJan,
I'm not going to smack you....LOL
I'll just tell you that Blake has had numerous scans and MRI's.  It's not a bad thing.....actually it's a good thing.  It helps in correct diagnosis.

Hi Jan,
Yes CT is the same as a 'cat scan'.  Very common diagnostic test and it's not a difficult test to go through (I've had one, too.)  Just lay on a board and then they send you through this "donut" that spins around you (you don't move though - just shut your eyes if the movement bothers you) - you can't move a muscle while they are taking pictures and they will probably give you an IV with dye in it.  It's not claustrophobic at all and it's over quick.
Let us know how it goes, ok?  I'm betting, if your diagnosis is clusters, the CT Scan will show normal results.

Mmmm, hubby is going in for some preliminary bloodwork this morning, and the CT is tomorrow. He did NOT have a cluster last night, which is wonderful! I can only hope this means his cycle might be coming to an end. If he doesn't have one tonight, I wonder if we should cancel the scan. We have a $1000 deductible, and I'm sure the scan will be expensive! Thanks for the support, ladies! It does make me feel better to know that the scans are pretty standard procedure.

I'm not sure if a MRI shows everything that a CT scan will show or not...if not, I wouldn't cancel the CT.  It would really suck later on to find out that it wasn't CH all along...it was something worse.  (life threatening, etc.)

My thoughts...

Actually, my fiancee always says he wishes they would find something in one of his numerous scans.  Anything, he says, a tumor, cancer, at least it would give him more of an answer then "Incurable headaches".  I think he figures if he knew the problem he could find an answer.  If your guy has Clusters then chances are, this CT will be the first of many.  Good luck though.

Well, I appreciate your advice, but we are going to put off the scan at least over the weekend. Hubby had another PF night, but a small-scale cluster around 6 a.m. He is also having fewer shadows during the day. It sounds to me like his cycle is ending, so the doctor agreed that it would be fine to wait a few more days and see if things continue to improve. We will go ahead with the scan if the headaches don't disappear altogether in a few more days. Thanks!
