Title: Re: Hey virus freaks!!.... Post by cootie on Sep 19th, 2003, 11:32pm I 'believe' the file was deleted by your antivirus for you b-4 you were infected the way it sounds...some can not be cleaned and must be deleted instead. My server detects virus's and sends them to a special mailbox then notifies me (does the same for most spam also)....I log in and can read the email sumtimes if cleaned up by my server.....but other times it cannot be read and was deleted for saftey sake....depending on the virus. I'd say you were safe.......but then......I could be wrong. Pam that rather be safe then wrong even tho I could be right |

Title: Re: Hey virus freaks!!.... Post by BarbaraD on Sep 20th, 2003, 7:05am You know me - I'm computer illerate, but there's something going around that NOrton isn't picking up on. I've had people coming in my office all week complaining that they've had something eating up their computers that they can't stop. Why don't these "smart" people who write these damn viruses use their tallents to do something "useful" instead of destroying things just because they can? Hugs BD |

Title: Re: Hey virus freaks!!.... Post by Lone_Wolf_FLA on Sep 20th, 2003, 8:22am No, you are not infected. The message was to simply tell you that an e-mail you had recieved WAS infected, the e-mail service provider's anti-virus software (Norton), detected the infection and deleted the file "hccfwno.exe" from the message. Now if the file "hccfwno.exe" had still been attached and you opened the message then yes you would have been infected. |

Title: Re: Hey virus freaks!!.... Post by Mark C on Sep 20th, 2003, 1:06pm Hmmmmm........neither Symantec or Google returned a hit on "hccfwno.exe". My guess would be because of the rash of e-mail virus (viri?) some ISP's are blocking attachments. I doubt you have a bug this time, like Wolf said. ;D To be sure you can check here (http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.swen.a@mm.html) for info on the W32.Swen.A@mm nasty. I stopped opening all attachments a month ago. :-/ To prevent the DCOM exploit, the "hole" in Windows go and get the DCOMbobulator (http://grc.com/dcom/) from GRC.com. There is a good explanation of just what this hole is and a small program to plug the hole...againt this and all future DCOM exploits. I use it. Gotta go! http://www.drfeller.com/Mark/mark.gif |

Title: Re: Hey virus freaks!!.... Post by Lone_Wolf_FLA on Sep 21st, 2003, 8:17am Mark you probably wouldn't find the file listed directly as a virus. Most of the "critters" raging out there right now are self replicating worms. They often do this by spoofing an e-mail with a random named attachment, the only common thing is the attachment will be an "executable", ie- .exe, or .bin file, it may be named anything. One more thing folks, and this is important- NEVER open any message saying it is a critical update or software patch you need to install from Microsoft, or Microsoft Security, delete it immediately, it is either a virus or spyware, and either way just as well stick the fork in yourself cause you're done. Only thing I can tell anyone is if you don't have virus software get it, if you can't afford it McAfee used to give away a version of theirs, and I think they still do. |

Title: Re: Hey virus freaks!!.... Post by fubar on Sep 21st, 2003, 9:15am Lemme share Fu's plan for staying virus-free... 1) Go to www.grc.com. This site has a bunch of free tools that will help prevent your system from being infected in the first place. In particular, get the decombobulator.exe... this eliminate DCOM from your system (which you don't need). DCOM is the main problem these days. 2) sign up for and use McAfee Online www.mcafee.com. It updates itself so you don't have to worry about it. It is awesome. It installs a virus scanner that continually checks your system for virii. 3) Use Pest Patrol (http://www.pestpatrol.com). This finds and eliminates all kinds of nasty stuff. Worth every penny. 4) Use a personal firewall. I use Zone Alarm. They have a free version www.zonelabs.com 5) Use windowsupdate OFTEN. This is found in your IE browser under tools:windows update. If you use Windows Office, be SURE to update that as well at Office Update (http://office.microsoft.com/OfficeUpdate/default.aspx). If you follow those instructions, you should be pretty safe. -Fu |
