Title: Re: How many ADHD kids does it take? Post by Mark C on Sep 5th, 2003, 6:01pm Not to inject an attitude of indifference or show a lack of compassion but I had my son evaluated for ADHD a couple of years ago. During this very stressfull time I did much research into the current phase of ADHD diagnosis and came to the following conclusion. For some time, experts disagreed on how ADHD should be diagnosed — and even on whether it was a real disorder. But in 1998, the National Institute of Mental Health agreed that ADHD is a legitimate condition. In addition, most doctors believe that a child shouldn't receive a diagnosis of ADHD unless the core symptoms of hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattention have created significant problems at home and at school for at least 6 months. I also believe the term "ADHD" or whatever you want to call it is overused and could possibly be a ploy to either sell more drugs, or excuse bad parenting......no matter what I personally find it disturbing that so many people are willing to give so many children so many drugs. How many of US would have been ADHD in the 60's?! I offer some of the criteria for the diagnosis for ADHD including but not limited to... "often fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in schoolwork, work, or other activities often has difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities often does not seem to listen when spoken to directly often does not follow through on instructions and fails to finish schoolwork, chores, or duties in the workplace (not due to oppositional behavior or failure to understand instructions) often has difficulty organizing tasks and activities often avoids, dislikes, or is reluctant to engage in tasks that require sustained mental effort (such as schoolwork or homework) often loses things necessary for tasks or activities (toys, school assignments, pencils, books, or tools) often easily distracted by extraneous stimuli is often forgetful in daily activities. " By these standards I am STILL ADHD....geez. After the six month evaluation of my son, conducted by the school psychologist in conjuction with our pediatrician and home evaluation we came to the conclusion that we have a perfectly healthy, normal boy, which by just about any of the many definitions would be considered ADHD. By their nature children are ADHD. I am not discounting the fact that there is such a thing as ADHD, I just hate to see children medicated when it is not necessary....we are their protectors, they are innocent. Please do not be offended by my personal opnions and experience for it is just that...mine. Post by judyw on Sep 5th, 2003, 6:28pm Funny thread, I though it was the Polish that had trouble with light bulbs, or was that Blondes, oh well, what was the other thing? Still worth a smile...makes me feel more "normal" to have support when my family gives me a hard time about my "senior moments"... ;D ps: Mark, gave some good sights for info on ADHD, and seems your son is a lucky boy...took some mouth from grandma to stop the school from putting a troublemaker label on one of mine...when a little direction worked wonders....Some of us just need a little more support than others... ;) |

Title: ONE EYE!!!! Post by Carl_D on Sep 5th, 2003, 7:18pm I'm sorry. Just tried to lighten the mood a bit here on the board. If we can't laugh at ourselves once in awhile, what can we laugh at? THIS is coming from someone who HAD ADHD as a child but was unmedicated. I am still very very hyper, ask Jim (JDH) - he'll tell ya. For instance, on day 2 1/2 with NO sleep. Not a wink. Still very hyper, but the ADD is not as bad as it was when I was younger. Peace, and again - sorry. Carl D |

Title: Re: How many ADHD kids does it take? Post by Carl_D on Sep 5th, 2003, 7:34pm To be honest, I don't remember. Still have all of the report cards from when I was young, with notes that I was figdety, couldn't focus on a task at hand, and was often creating disturbances in class. It HAD to be ADHD. I swear it has nothing to do with the three 6's behind my ear that I hide with my naturally curly hair. Okay, that was a joke. A bad joke, but still a joke. I try ya know. I try really hard. Maybe I have too much fiber in my diet. Anyone can tell ya, I don't have hair (now crying profusely). I had long beautiful hair. It was thick. Now it sparsely grows. I used to think when I was younger, maybe if I shaved my head, during an attack you might see some pulsating in the temple area. A quiver or something. No such luck. Anyway...am slap-happy from no sleep, and being holed up in a studio with madmen who talked me into doing a heavy version of "Daydream Believer" - and I have to say, it is cool. Big chief no fun of the "I don't wanna" tribe, Carl D |

Title: Re: How many ADHD kids does it take? Post by Charlie on Sep 5th, 2003, 7:59pm Simple answer to ADHD since you sent us to a Liddy site: When you are unsure about where to stand on an issue, take a look at Tom Delay's position. If you take the opposite position, you'll almost always be right. While not quite as bad, this would apply to Liddy too. Charlie |
