Title: Non CH qu about 'puters Post by Hooter on Aug 27th, 2003, 9:19pm Quick question folks Call me Mrs Paranoid but I go into my Windows file and delete all the unwanted cookies every couple of days. Is this a pointless exercise? W the B |

Title: Re: Non CH qu about 'puters Post by Opus on Aug 27th, 2003, 9:44pm Hooter, Cookies aren't all bad, some are good. If you want no one to know where you are on the web by looking at your computer then that is what you want to do. But if there is any spyware on your puter then someone knows what you are doing. get this program http://spybot.eon.net.au/ It will scan and remove all spyware and bad cookies from your system. It also has utilities and on-line updates. Opus/Paul |

Title: Re: Non CH qu about 'puters Post by Hooter on Aug 27th, 2003, 9:48pm Thanks Paul. I knew they spied on me, that's why I hate them and I take them off and leave only the useful ones where I want to be recognised when I log on (like this site) but I wasn't aware I could download something to do it for me. That will save loads of deleting time! Thanks Wendy |

Title: Re: Non CH qu about 'puters Post by badfly on Aug 27th, 2003, 11:01pm you need the cookies really, if you want some websites to auto log you in etc. Opus is absolutly right about Spybot though, you HAVE to get that! |

Title: Re: Non CH qu about 'puters Post by UnsolvedEquation on Aug 28th, 2003, 1:29am "call me Mr. Paranoid" ... but as long as you're running Windows...you've got a security problem !! |

Title: Re: Non CH qu about 'puters Post by Kirk on Aug 28th, 2003, 4:20am UnsolvedEquation all operating systems have security problems. Linux is much more secure and cracking BSD can be a serious job, but it can be done. As much as they bitch about it , people on the whole prefer the devil they know. Besides they paid good money for these systems. So they must have recieved something of value. No matter what you, I or anyone else tells them, or how many crashes they have. So take a deep breath cd /var/logs and clear them, check your Snort db, and think of all the comic relief ahead of you. Everytime some PFY script kiddie puts together a virus. For you with your Linux or BSD system it dumps to dev/null. In the ol bit bucket it goes. You don't even notice, then the phone rings. My computer just crashed they say. You think to yourself "sorry for your luck sucker" and bask in the glow of the biggest joke in modern history. Don't get to comfortable with that bunky. Last year Mr. David Alchin VP of Windows for Microsoft Corp. Better known as The Evil Empire said "We can make an operating system as good as Linux." So keep an eye out in the direction of Redmond. They do have the resources to do it. As long as people keep on ponying up the billions for things like XP, fat chance. When the great unwashed figure out they've been had though, watch out. At that point Redmond might just carry out the threat of building a computer operating system and you will be building and compiling custom kernels at two in the morning just to keep ahead. Instead of drinking and playing Net Hack or sleeping, ya pervert. As for me I'm going to have some more of this Rum and relax until the beast shows and gives me something to be really pissed about. What a bunch of half baked generalizations, am I gonna get flamed or what hehehehehehehe. TTFN |

Title: Re: Non CH qu about 'puters Post by Mark C on Aug 28th, 2003, 7:28am I delete my cookies every time my browser is closed, automatically, except for the ones I want to keep. Windows, out of the box, is not secure, but it can be made pretty tight....mine is. ;D This stuff is a labor of love for me though...I do it for fun. I have been considering returning to school for some type of documentation of my greatness ! ;D Some of the programs I use for security are... http://www.popupcop.com/ http://www.iolo.com/sm/ http://www.safer-networking.org/ http://www.xp-antispy.de/ And one of my favorites.... "Steganos Anonym 5 you can surf the Net anonymously with just one mouse click. Your IP address remains hidden from Web operators: You appear under constantly changing camouflage addresses that run on a network of proxy servers, scattered all over the world. If you wish, your apparent identity can be changed every second. One moment you can appear to be from Finland and the next moment the net operator sees you as a Taiwanese net-surfer" http://www.steganos.com/en/sia/info.htm Can anyone say "file-share" ? ;D To name a few. I won't continue for fear of boring you. On ward through the fog.. Mark |

Title: Re: Non CH qu about 'puters Post by Hooter on Aug 29th, 2003, 8:46pm Paul Thanks for the tip about Spybot, it is now installed. Silly family story here: Quite coincidentally and on the same day my brother was called as he often is by my rather aged Dad to sort out a computer problem he was having. My Dad is what is known here as a 'Silver Surfer' and has no real idea what he is doing but loves the Internet and runs up huge bills. We now know why. Expect you have guessed by now, one very embarassed 75 year old had been visiting sites of a 'dubious' nature and had managed to set himself up with some of these 'diallers' (hope I've got the right word) and a few other computer glitches which my brother then had to clean up for him using Spybot. My father's Favourites folder entitled rather sweetly "Erotica" is now empty! Serves him right the dirty old git! ;D ;D W |

Title: Re: Non CH qu about 'putersI did know enough Post by Opus on Aug 29th, 2003, 10:02pm Hey Hooter, I got some of thoes dialers from visiting hacking, cracking sites. I did know enough not to let them have acess to my modem, One did get away from me and I had to unplug the phone line. I guess spybot should be run at start up on your Dad's machine for safety. It can be ste to do that. Make sure you check for updates from time to time. Opus/Paul |
