Post by david_spencer on Aug 23rd, 2003, 9:30pm
:othanks to judy and karen for your emails and kind words. am so glad i found this support group.  i thought iwas the only person on earth that suffered like this! just recently, i found out my son {age38} has them as well. can these headaches be hereditary?  sometimes i crave black, hot coffee when i get one. anyone else? hope to talk to you all again soon. david

There is a hereditary factor involved. My father used to get them as well. There's some great info in the OUCH library on the hereditary factor (and much more).
Sometimes I crave black coffee when I get them too. Or when they leave. Or pretty much any part of the day.

I drink coffee like crazy when I get hit.  It doesn't seem to help the situation, and I have no idea if it makes it worse.  They seem to get worse no matter what anyway!   :P

So far as I know I'm the first to have this horror but then those old Swedes would suffer anything.

The black coffee thing is interesting because I drink gallons of the stuff and my CH began to disappear about the time I got to drinking more and more.  Makes me wonder but it seems so damn simple.

My grandfather (my mothers dad) got clusters, called them histamine headaches back then.....  all I remember is my grandmother telling me about him banging his head against the wall and I just could not picture why he would do that over a headache......guess I learned why the hard way.

No one else in my family have clusters but a lot of them suffer from "ordinary" migraines.

Coffee - OH YEAH!!! I drink lots and lots of coffee when I'm in a cycle... 20 cups a day at the least.  :o

My Father also was a sufferer and for years i just assumed it was heriditary but then when i started researching them, eveyone said they are NOT heriditary. I beg to differ. Genetics may have a huge factor in it, maybe its just 2 generations Away instead of 1. I also love my coffee, but i hated coffee when i was 16, and thats when mine started. BUT, I did love Coca Cola, i.e. CAFFEINE!! Makes ya kind of wonder, I have read lots of info on Caffeine, some good, some bad!

David,

Caffeine is a vaso-constrictor, as is many of the medications for clusters like caffergot.  Ice also is a vasoconstrictor.  I'm not convinced about the hereditary thing.   Looks like you have a wonderful supporter there in your wife.  I think you should keep her.  lol

hi cootie. yeah- ive tried ice and cold wash cloths but it didnt do much either. i dont think theres a whole heck of a lot that WILL help once one of those headaches gets a grip on you. one doctor told me if he could get me started on medicine before my seasonal attck started it would stop them from starting at all. but who knows exactly when theyll hit? mine has varied from starting a cycle in april to starting in november!he said once i had the first one, the meds were no good. so who knows? propanalol takes the edge off, but is in no way a cure!   david

David,
I use coffee as part of my treatment. It seems to even help Imetrex, esp. to kill thoes wake up calls. Normally I drink 8 cups a day, PF and 12 cups during a cycle.

support................wow.  how do i properly thank and show gratitude towards any supporter who did not look at me in a somewhat perplexed manner which further aliented me in my illness :)..........it happened for over half my life and can't tell ya whatit means to have someone just hold my hand with eyes welled up and understanding -- to those folks -- you have no idea how important you really are!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To suffer in the hurricane is one thing.  To blow around the outskirts and watch and then still cling -- well, that's sumpin ELSE and so godam important.

Thanks to all of you who hold out a hand in the midst of the storm.  You are strong and good.  Hold tite the rope :)

I hope all you genetic fuckups have completed the heritability survey at the OUCH site.  If not, then do it now.  We need this stuff.

My maternal grandfater, also a Scandinavian, had 'em.
