Title: help me please!
Post by tommy_walton on Aug 17th, 2003, 8:58am
I suffer from headache pain so severe, I need help.  The pain has forced me to do research which has brought me here.  I have had terrible headaches for about 3 weeks now.  last week i went to a doctor who suspects it could be sinus trouble.  the only poblem is i have no symptoms of a sinus problems and never have.  I will try to describe this pain and maybe someone will understand.  the pain is very intense like nothing i have ever felt or even thought a human being could feel.  when the attacks come, around midnight almost every night it wakes me from deep sleep only to torment me for about 1 hour.  nothing provides relief. the only way i can deal with it is to move around, scream and kick things I can't sit still, and the pain is so great i become inraged and want to destroy things and hit myself in the temple.  the headaches also come around noon and again around 3 p.m.  each day. for 3 weeks i have had at least two, and as many as 4 everyday.   the pain starts behind my left eye only and is full blown in a few minutes.  it feels like someone has taken a dull kitchen knife and has inserted it above my eye and is trying to pry it out of the socket.the pain is constant not really throbbing.  my viens in my temple become enlarged and blood rushes through.  at night i am terrified to go to sleep.  I would do almost anything to relieve myself of this pain.  narcotics and alcohol are out of the question as i am a recovering drug addict clean for 19 months.  these headaches come and go with almost clockwork frequency and i have begun to keep a log of them for about a week.  someone please help me to uderstand whats going on.  this pain has taken over my daily activity and when i don't have a headache all a do is worry about when the next one is going to come.  this is very frustrating and i need to understand so i can figure out what to do.

Good morning tommy,
First, congratulations with your fight against narcotics and alcohol. Neither of them would help with the pain of clusterheadaches and most probably would make them worse.

Most all of us were first diagnosed with sinus trouble, the sent to the dentist, then we went to the ear-nose-throat-guy and then to the eye doc. On the left side of the board is a 'cluster quiz' button. Click it and take the quiz. It certainly sounds to me like you are suffering from clusterheadaches. Sorry to have to say that.

Look under all the buttons then click the 'OUCH website' button and read everything there.

After all that reading you will know more about cluster headaches than 98.3% of the doctors in the world.

Get your doctor to refer you to a neurologist.

Welcome to the most painful site on the web. Sorry you had to come looking for it.

Sounds like a "Classic Case of CH" to me. I am sorry for you too. Welcome to the CH nightmare website. Lots of great people here who know exactly how you are feeling. Lots of information on the buttons to the left. I hoep you find help soon.

Patrick

Tommy,
Like Bob said...good call on leaving the drugs and booze alone.  It's a fact that for most cluster sufferers the combination just complicates matters.

Study the information here and on the OUCH site.  It will help you get a correct diagnosis sooner.  Knowledge is power.

Bless your heart and good luck....

Hi Tommy and welcome.  Your description sounds very much like cluster headaches.  Stick around to learn and find out for sure.  It will probably be helpful to find a good neurologist even if the headaches finally subside, because cluster headaches will return.  And cluster headaches can be treated... a good neurologist can be a big help.  I'm assuming the past 3 weeks have been your first experience with these headaches?  Perhaps your cycles will be relatively short and far between, hang in there.

This site is the best thing that could happen to a cluster headache sufferer.  You will not believe the  amount of information here......so do your homework and go to your doc with printed info.  Not many docs know a great deal ( if anything at all ) about cluster headaches.  Even some printed info on medical sites here on the internet are way off base.

The cluster quiz on the left is the best (besides us personally) diagnostic tool around.

Stay close......we'll be looking for you.  If you have a supporter, we have a place for them here too.  Sometimes supporters need support....just ask us.

Glad you came along.

Welcome Tommy!
So glad you did that research that brought you here!
You have a lot of reading to do from this site and have you considered joining the OUCH site? There's lots of info there too.

The great thing about this site is that everyone helps eachother to find means to deal with these ha. I have learned more from these two sites than anywhere else.

Wishing you PFDAN

Tommy-

First of all, sorry to hear about what sounds very much like you becoming a clusterhead (CH).

Stay away from the drugs and the booze...you want to get better, right?

Next, GO TO THE NEUROLOGIST.  Have a reliable diagnostic scan of your head made to rule out any other possible reasons for the pain.

If it turns out that you have, in fact, become a CH, then I say Welcome!, and please understand how sorry we are that you have joined us.

Just curious...how old are you?...smoker?...male/female?...family history of headaches?

Remember, none of the above will mean that much medically speaking, but we often like to know if there are similarities between the CHs.

I am very sorry to welcome you to this site, as it means you are in pain.  Now that you have that pain, we all want to help.  You can't beleive the support that will come your way from the "family" here.

From your description, it does sound like cluster headaches.  But, just because I, and others here, feel it could be, go see a neurologist!  Make sure it is not something else.  Get a cat scan, mri, etc.  Make sure it is not anything else.  As much as many of us complain about the medical community, you need to go there.

Make sure you read up on this site, and OUCH.  You are starting out in the right direction.  Don't let any one make you think you are crazy!  -- Well, maybe you are ... hee hee ... some of us have actually been certified as crazies!  Me included!  But seriously, some have had to go thru that humiliation before the correct diagnosis was found.

I recently got my ass kicked by many members here for self diagnosing.  Don't do it!   Learn from this site, but please go see a good neurologist!

Please keep us posted, we really do care!

Chuck

Dammit. That sounds like cluster headache to me too. I've very sorry but at least you found us who really know what you're saying about the level of pain and what it does to you.

If you stick around you'll find lots of support and good ideas about coping with this horror.

Let us know how you're doing.

Good job leaving the bad stuff behind.
CH might suck, but it's way easier to handle without other monkeys on your back.

read up, it helps.

CH and that other progran go hand in hand...this site, when it's cooking, mirrors the other program...lots of support.

use the serenity prayer on yer CH. Theres a helluva lot you can't control...but with the knowledge and power here there is much that you can change....to manage yer pain.

Our CH pain opens the medicine cabinets, makes available to us a variety of drugs...some of which are very addictive.  We drunks and addicts must be extremely careful to limit our use of them to extingishing the pain...not to fill that gap which only love can fill.

Once clean we can see how esy it is too fool ourselves. Stay close and honest to someone.
