Title: I have 2 questions!
Post by Patrick_A on Aug 14th, 2003, 11:05pm
I forgot to ask my Neuro, But how long does it take for Verapamil and Prednisone to typically start working. When should i start noticing a difference?

I have a friend from Australia coming over in 2 weeks. He is a big drinker and loves to Party hard. I have always not drank when i was in cycle. Will Imitrex keep the CH at bay if a have a few to drink. Can i drink while taking Verapamil and Prednisone?

Thanks, Patrick

When Brad started his cycle he swore it was anything but CH comein back so he'd have a few beers ta relax at nite...go to bed and WHAM he'd git hit hard then threats around 2:00 am on. So he fineally realized it was what he hoped it wasn't......got back on the verapimil and imitrex......but.....still tired ta have a beer or two in the evenin's ta 'take that edge off'......and agin.........WHAM within the hour. He did this for a while...he jus kept thinkin if he could get into a chill out mode every nite it'd work on the ch.......of course.....he was wrong. So if ya wanna drink expect ta git hit within the hour or so......but everyone is different. Of course they say not ta drink with most meds.....whatever ya do b-careful !! Sorry yer goin thru all this now and hope I been of sum help ? I suspect a big part of this house is in the dark rite now...literally.....at the moment. Pam that still see's the light

Hope all is well with this outage ordeal..........

Verap 5-7 days

Prednisone 1 day

As far as drinking,

Imitrex no

prednisone yes, if dose is 60mg or higher

verap 50/50 maybe

Thats been my experience

Your milage may vary.

Hey Patrick!

To answer your question, in my case, Prednisone starts working almost instantly while the Verapamil will take 5-7 days to start taking effect.  The Pred gives me a fighting chance before the Verapamil kicks in.

As for the booze, for me, it's not even a question during cycle.  I can't touch it.  But hey, that's just me!

Wishing you pain free days ahead (and lots of them)!

here's what i know......prednisone should work real fast  @ high doses( taper pack)   and as far as keepin' the H.A's at bay when drinkin'  for me when i'm in cycle.......no drinks......out of cycle......many drink's.   good luck to ya!                                                      ............Jack

I wouldnt do it unless you want to spend time 'splainin to your friend what the F is wrong with you... We went to the lake 2 weeks ago... Dave was still in his "IM not letting this beast tell me what to do phase"  He snuck a beer... Out on the boat with  4 kids and 4 adults... Dave got whacked big time...............a definate 10. No where to go but in the water.  He didnt want to scare the kids.  He dove in (remembering Cat at the convention) and swam swam swam swam...  That was Daves last beer... for this cycle anyway... if you have a few pain free days between now and then maybe but be ready if you do... good luck and have fun... be the designated driver...ree

sorry Patrick, but in my long experience of both CH, Pred, Imitrex and booze, simply put the booze will trigger a HA unless you are one of the rare people it doesn't affect. I usually fail to respect my own advice and several occassions during a cycle, especially if I have been PF for a day or 2. I take a drink and 30 mins later I am in agony and reching for the injection and the eveneng is over, where if I had stuck to coca cola I would have probably made it to the early hours.

Many years ago I found that I could get away with drinking scotch as it did nit seem to have the same trigger effect, but I'm not sure I would trust it now. If you are brave and really want to break the rules you might try it. Or just tell your mate you are a total wuss!

Good luck
John

Some people have reported that vodka doesn't seem to be a trigger for them during cycles or whatever.  Now, I am not a lush, but I can also say that I have not been hit while drinking vodka that I can recall.  I am a chronic and I avoid alcohol like the plague!  I did have a drink with vodka last night, and I was just fine.  Of course we are all different, but I have heard it from numerous folks that vodka didn't trigger for them when other tasty beverages did.  So far, that still holds true for me.
