Title: Re: CHers in NY, Detroit, Toronto, Ottawa - North Post by BobG on Aug 14th, 2003, 4:39pm Hey all you Northeasterners! Ooopps......can't see this can ya? 8) neener, neener, neener I say we talk about them while they can't see us. ;D Just kidding. I work in the power transmission industry and from the reports we're getting is "Don't set your alarm for work tomorrow morning. It ain't gonna work, the subway won't be going anywhere and if you can get to work the elevator won't be working" It's going to be a long, dark weekend on Broadway. :( |

Title: Re: CHers in NY, Detroit, Toronto, Ottawa - North Post by juvy on Aug 14th, 2003, 4:43pm lol Bob, they're going to beat you up when they get back. They better have the power back on in Detroit by Saturday. I'm not sitting on a 9 hour flight so I can stay in a hotel with no electricity. This is not a "camping" trip. ~Juvy |

Title: Re: CHers in NY, Detroit, Toronto, Ottawa - North Post by jonny on Aug 14th, 2003, 4:51pm I can see you Bob so watch your tongue.....LOL Bloomburg in NY says buisness as usuall tommorrow ..............................jonny |

Title: Re: CHers in NY, Detroit, Toronto, Ottawa - North Post by BobG on Aug 14th, 2003, 4:55pm juvy.......just in case take a camp stove with you. ;) Luckly that part of the country has a lot of hydro power generation and those generators can get back "on line" quickly. Those generators will then be used to provide startup power for the fossel fuel generators. But, the fossel fueled plants will take a minimum of 24 hours to get "on line". Then the transmission systems must be re-energized to the sub-transmission systems. Then the sub-transmission sytems can be used to pick up the distribution systems and then the customers can turn on the lights in the hotel in Detroit. Simple huh? :o |

Title: Re: CHers in NY, Detroit, Toronto, Ottawa - North Post by catlind on Aug 14th, 2003, 7:30pm Having lived through ice storm 98 where the power went out and suddenly there was no water, no gas for generators or vehicles, no money, no grocery stores that had milk or fresh stuff, no heat, etc etc., I know the folks that live in upstate get a little nervous when there's a black out of unknown origin and unknown duration. You can make fun of my concern if ya want, I know it's a little on the silly side, but I know the concern when suddenly you are without power, and you learn the hard way just how much of your life relies on power. I know I am still nervous about the power being out and my grandmother being out in the country by herself without means of getting help should her medical conditions require it. Just want to know that the folks I know in the affected areas are ok. See what I get for not whining enough? I gotta take slack for showing concern ;) Need to whine more I guess LOL. Cat |

Little did we all know, you were the energy force. Need proof? 'Cat leaves NY and power blackout soon follows... details at 10'. Sheesh Cat, what did you do, take all the energy and leave? LOL. anyway, no problems here. --- Steve |

Surely you jest. In blackouts, Upstaters all get together and mow each other's lawns, eat all the perch from the freezer before it goes bad, pool our hooch supplies, cool off by sitting in the SUV with the AC, and top off the day playing croquet by Coleman Lantern. It's a whirlwind existence. 1965 was the most fun because Mom and Dad were in Bermuda at a brake lining convention (True) and I had the refreshments to myself. 8) The power came back on in ten minutes for us and I watched Walter Cronkite do the news by lantern. (also true) No doubt for effect. It's also true that I was alone. A sadder state of affairs, there never was. Nothing changes.......sigh. Jamestown was off for about 6 hours tonight and Walmart ran out of D cells. I had coffee at Wendy's with my preacher neighbor. Everyone here was fine. Charlie |

Title: Re: CHers in NY, Detroit, Toronto, Ottawa - North Post by suzy617 on Aug 15th, 2003, 4:17am Staten Island power came back on at 1:35. God, what a boring evening. >:( Lots of cops around as soon as darkness hit, guess they were preparing for the looters. I sat outside my house watching the stupid ass cars zooming thru the dead traffic lights, listening to screeching tires. Was pretty damn hot with no fans. Stopped for pizza then went to friends house who was having a blackout party, had a few drinks and came home. Well back to normal now for me, some still have no power though. Gotta run now and pack my bags for atlantic city... Suzy |

Aha!! I think Steve's on to something. I wonder if Nebraska is having a sudden boost in their energy supply. Hopefully not too much because being so close to Iowa would sure make for a heap of popcorn if it got out of control. ;D Hey, I agree with you Cat. I've done the black-out thing after an ice storm and it's all fun for a short while. However, if you have to go 3 or 4 days without power it can really start to get messy. Later BruceD |

Title: Re: CHers in NY, Detroit, Toronto, Ottawa - North Post by catlind on Aug 15th, 2003, 7:11am ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!! Popcorn hahaha!! That's a good one Bruce. As far as I know Nebraska and Iowa are relatively safe for the time being. Kansas will be in trouble next month though when I head there LOL. Iowa huh Bruce? And you make cheesecake.... And I'm in the next state... When's dinner? LOL And yes, after a few days, or weeks as the case was in 98, blackout's lose alllll their charm hehe. Cat |

Title: Re: CHers in NY, Detroit, Toronto, Ottawa - North Post by maggie_may on Aug 15th, 2003, 7:21am Good morning everyone from Bergen and Hudson County, New Jersey :) Over in Elmwood Park in Bergen County, we didn't have power until somewhere around 1am - hot night, no sleep >:( Secaucus in Hudson County is up and running - or you wouldn't see this. I'm at work now, but no one else is. I think everyone else was smart and decided to stay home ::) My parents' live in Roselle, next to Elizabeth, NJ and they only lost power for 5 minutes around 415pm last night. They were lucky! everythings cool by me now :D maggie |

Title: Re: CHers in NY, Detroit, Toronto, Ottawa - North Post by miCHel on Aug 15th, 2003, 7:50am Hey Catlind, If you went through the 98 Ice Storm, I can understand your concern. At the time, I lived in what became known as the "Ice Triangle" on the south shore of Montreal. I was out of power (and out of my home) for 26 days in the middle of the winter with a 2 year-old and a 5-month pregnant girlfriend. We had to move like 6 times during those 26 days (friends and families, cottage, hotels...). Not very fun for us... Fortunately I was PF at the time :P But the beauty of it was how people started to mobilize themselves to help each other and come up with clever ideas to cope with the situation. In my town, a carwash was transformed into public showers! Very cool to take a shower and wash the car at the same time. You just had to make sure to use the right shampoo ;D. Losing power in the summertime is a whole different ball game. Maybe a little less dangerous but definitely not pleasant if it takes a while to get back. miCHel |

Title: Re: CHers in NY, Detroit, Toronto, Ottawa - North Post by Peppermint on Aug 15th, 2003, 6:05pm Well I'm checking in so you can laugh your asses off.... IT was HELL. Hell I tell you. I thought to myself, as I was exiting the bathroom stall at work.. woops, someone shut the lights off... then, the slow deadly whirrdown of the power going out. Instantly I thought - TERRORISTS. :-[ I am not one to panic but one of the other ladies did. I said, calm down its just the lights... but my heart was pounding a mile a minute... thoughts of 911 raced through my head and so... walked down 43 flights of stairs, got shuffled out onto the heat and sidewalk which was a river of people, pretty calm I might add. After walking about 10 blocks in the city to the 59th street bridge (no schlitz, bleagghh :P) and FINDING chaos and gridlock, it was insane I tell ya, I looked at all the empty cars going by.... hmmmm.... time to hitch a ride!!! A big air-conditioned car, with a nice lady driver, let my co-worker and I hop in, tailed by hangers on... and across we went. . VERY slowly. She let us off at the end sooo... I trekked it again, for another stretch, then hitched another ride (hey, people were hitchpooling ::) )...through the LIE, within a couple miles of my car. It was easy after that, only 2.5 hours to get to back my car finally... no food at home, no money... talk about unprepared! The worse part was sitting there with nothing to do but TAlk to my mom and kid... OI vey. I drank a WARM BEER...and went to sleep. on 08/14/03 at 18:24:32, Slammy wrote:
SLAMMY ? - BITE ME... ;) It was nice to have someone make me laugh in the middle of all the chaos. When I was almost to the car, I was extremely tired and getting more nervous by the minute. Sundown in a blackout is not a good time to be on the street. Well, no 911 repeat, but shows you what is easily taken for granted, and how quickly we forget. The more time I spend here, the more I think, I have GOT to get out of NY!!! Peppermint |
