Title: eastern alternative!!! Post by jajomo on Aug 2nd, 2003, 11:05pm Hello all My name is Mick and I suffer CH and have done for the last 13 years.I am 42 married with 3 kids and live in Australia.I have tried some western drugs for the pain and preventitives but the last few years have gone drug free. It is extremely painful but I beleive that the drugs available do more damage long-term... I am now am on a course of herbs (chinese medicine)that I have now taken for 1 week only. The course lasts 10 weeks. I cannot tell you what is in "the brew" as I do not know. The chinese physician that I am seeing seems to think that strengthening the liver and kidneys would help the blood flow evenly rather than in gushes thus keeping blood-pressure from rising. Last week I began my CH again that is why I am trying this now(only 7 weeks to go)Iusually have pain around the 7-8-9 on the kip scale...I get the 10 just at the end of the cycle .I hope this has helped in someway. I will keep you posted on my progress with the herbs...............mick |

Post by Big_Dan on Aug 2nd, 2003, 11:17pm Hey man... sorry you had to find us... but you came to the right spot... ... be sure you see a neuro if you haven't already to get the right diagnosis... I'm sure that you're confident in the herbal treatment that you're trying now.. but there may be some things that you haven't tried in ways of conventional medicine, that will help more... Here's hoping you find some relief... -Big Dan |

Title: Re: eastern alternative!!! Post by Charlie on Aug 3rd, 2003, 6:42pm Sorry you have this horror. If something makes you feel better, do it. It's Ueli's turn...In the meantime, here is a sample of Western, New York medicine: Dr. Wright’s Circulatory Technique This technique significantly helped to shorten my cluster headache attacks. It involves concentrating on trying to redirect a little more circulation to the arms, hands, or legs. It can described as a kind of internal “flexing” or “push.” Increased circulation will result in a reddening and warming of the hands. Try to think of it as “filling” your hands with redirected blood. The important and difficult part is that it has to be done without interruption through the pain. Do not give up in frustration. It may not work on the first try. If you do, it never will. Every now and then it can work almost immediately. I lived for those moments. Try experimenting between attacks. You will find that it gets easier with practice. I was given less than five minutes instruction in the use this method. The doctor, while holding his arm at his side, showed me that he could slightly increase his arm and hand circulation. After several attempts, I was able to repeat this procedure and use it successfully the same day. I have had about a 75% success rate shortening these attacks. My 20-minute attacks were often reduced to 10 minutes or less. Once proven that I had a chance dealing with this horror, I always gave it a try as I had nothing to lose but pain. I am not sure what mechanism is triggered by this method but whatever it is, at least indirectly kills the pain. I do know that this technique has nothing to do with meditation, relaxation, or psychic ability. It is entirely physical and takes real concentration. This technique is very useful while waiting for medication to take effect or when none is available. It costs nothing, is non-invasive, and can be used just about anywhere. It is not a miracle but it helped me deal with this beast. It can be a bit exhausting but the success rate was good enough for me and a cluster headache sufferer will do just about anything to end the pain. It gives us a fighting chance. Give it your best shot and I wish you the best of luck fighting this demon. Charlie Strand |

Title: Re: eastern alternative!!! Post by vig on Aug 4th, 2003, 11:23am the PAIN is pure and simple. It's INTENSE...and that's putting it mildly. But when IT's over, it's over. I feel better, except when I've taken medicine and some sickly feeling always lingers. I don't want to trade the pain for something else. So far, the (Western) drugs I have taken have taken little of that pain away. Sometimes Imitrex works, sometimes not. None of the drugs are 'clean' for side effects and I think the ones we're supposed to take are way worse than the pain. I don't need any more hair. I don't need to be fatigued, steroided, or have 'male' problems. If those are my choices, I'd rather just hurt. Herbs are good too, but you'll find their effectiveness fades just like the other meds. |

Title: Re: eastern alternative!!! Post by Carl_D on Aug 4th, 2003, 1:33pm I've tried, literally dozens of 'herbal cocktails' to try and find a non-pharmacological solution to the bastages, but alas, none worked. Tried Feverfew, Kava root, Golden Seal root, Ginger root, Chickweed, St Johns Wort, Ginseng, Ginko Biloba, Ma Huang (also known as Ephedra, or ephedrine). I DO NOT recommend Ma Huang, as it will actually intensify the attacks and aggravate the clusters. Recently, I have tried a new triptan called 'Relpax'. Worked once, didn't do shit the other 8 times. I almost feel like I have a literal war going on inside me and everytime I come up with a new attack plan, the enemy gets wise and finds another stragetical barrier to break through - it is almost like the m*th*rf**k*r is mutating inside me. Been chronic too fucking long, and am afraid it is gonna last. Peace, Carl D |
