Title: 'Nother Poll Post by ozzman on Jul 28th, 2003, 8:58am I think it was mentioned befor but not in poll form. Somewhere a loong time ago I read that there may some sort of connection with head injury and CHs With as much as 6 years before the onset of symptoms. How about 10 years? I don' t know. So for our weekly poll here is the question: Did you sustain any sort of significant head trauma up to 10 years prior to the time when you began having CHs? Me exactly 10 years before I started to get CHs (I was 4) I fell off my dad's F-150 roof head first agains the concrete! ;D (I know, I know, that explains everything...LOL) (That's not even counting the time I got hit, on the head of course, by a shovel {9 years old}, or the time I got hit with a rock {16}, but those were only surface wounds, and not significant.. ohhh, I just remember another one, but I think I' m going to stop now. Title: Re: 'Nother Poll Post by catlind on Jul 28th, 2003, 9:36am Hmmm I have suffered a head injury, but nothing major. The only one I can think of before the CH nightmare kicked into full gear was when I was I was going down the hill at an alarming rate of speed and stopped myself by using my head on a mogul. Worked like a charm, stopped dead in my slide and sat there for several min. after coming too. ;) Cat |

Title: Re: 'Nother Poll Post by echo on Jul 28th, 2003, 9:42am Got hit in the head numerous times by frozen disks of rubber growing up. Don't personally think it has anything to due with my CH, but most definately has something to due with the number of missing teeth I have. |

Title: Re: 'Nother Poll Post by aprilbee on Jul 28th, 2003, 9:49am I was in 5th grade and I got this crazy idea to shake my head side to side as hard as I could. it was about 2 years later I started getting CH. I still to this day can't turn my head around really fast. I get dizzy and sick. Maybe I shook my brain loose...Does that count as head trauma? :P |

The pictures of that black and blue (head to foot) baby are enough to make you puke. I've often wondered if there was a connection. [the criminal was put behind bars] -Fu |

Title: Re: 'Nother Poll Post by Live4Fun on Jul 28th, 2003, 11:59am There are rumors that my oldest sister dropped me on my head when I was 3 months old... that explains a lot about me, but probably not my CHs :) :) |

Title: Re: 'Nother Poll Post by There_Back on Jul 28th, 2003, 12:22pm Grew up as a rebel, crashed the bike, crashed the car, was hit once in the temple with a rock, skied into a fence post and was knocked out in addition to several fights. so the answer is yes and I'm sure there were way more times then I can remember. My father also had these monsters. |

Title: Re: 'Nother Poll Post by Live4Fun on Jul 28th, 2003, 12:28pm LOL Ozz - I don't really think my sister dropped me, that was just my family picking on me for being so strange. I did think of two other instances (about 10 years before my clusters started) in little league baseball I got knocked out by a line drive (the baseball left the imprint of stitches in my head for weeks) and another game where I had a head on collision with the catcher trying to catch the same baseball. (Yes, we were like the bad news bears ;D ) You could probably mark mine to a yes... Bryan |

Title: Re: 'Nother Poll Post by KingOfPain on Jul 28th, 2003, 12:35pm When I was a kid, my sister hit me in the head with a baseball bat (no kidding). :o Does that count? CH started when I was 21ish. KingOfPain |

Title: Re: 'Nother Poll Post by Major_Headcase on Jul 28th, 2003, 12:40pm 5 years before my first CH cycle, I underwent spinal surgury to replace a blown disk in my neck (C4-C5). The disk blew out about 18 months before that, but no insurance so I had to wait 18 months before Voc Rehab finally picked up my case (long story). I'm not sure if neck stuff counts for this survey, but my gut feeling is that my surgury and my CH are somehow connected. Boy, nothing like having a group of strangers knock you out, tie you down, slit your throat, and wield sharp pointy things around your spinal cord to remind you just how precious, and fragile, Life is. ;D -John |

Title: Re: 'Nother Poll Post by Melissa on Jul 28th, 2003, 1:48pm Nope, no head injury that I know of. Only thing I got was whiplash when I was 16. Was leaning over, changing the radio station in my boyfriend's car (not buckled) when a deer jumped out in front of us. After that happened, my neck would freeze up, and I couldn't turn it. My CH's began not too long after that. |

Title: Re: 'Nother Poll Post by FrankF on Jul 28th, 2003, 1:48pm I belong to another online support group for traumatic brain injury survivors and family (wife was in a coma for 7 weeks). Several people there complain of daily headaches, though I can think of only one who said it was cluster headaches. I think I'll go ask the question. |

Title: Re: 'Nother Poll Post by brain_cramps on Jul 28th, 2003, 1:57pm Not enough fingers to count the concussions I've had over the years... (hockey) One particular concussion 6 months prior to my first CH that required a hospital stay. grant :-[ |

Title: Re: 'Nother Poll Post by ozzman on Jul 28th, 2003, 2:13pm Will let run for another day or so and will post the tally. It seems so far over 90% (made up numbers, too lazy and tired to really figure it out) of sufferers had some sort of head injury. Interesting... Maybe that's why, we, as a bunch, just ain' t right!! ;D ;D Ozzy |

Title: Re: 'Nother Poll Post by jonny on Jul 28th, 2003, 2:52pm Seems to me that if a head injury has anything to do with CH it would probably have an effect on ones sex drive, the CH problem is in the hypothomala thingy which is where you get your sex drive so I hear on the radio from one of these sex docs. Anyone here have no sex drive? Like I said, I heard it on the radio .........................................jonny |

Title: Re: 'Nother Poll Post by Spindrift on Jul 28th, 2003, 2:55pm Well, Nixon's elections, especially the second one, shook me up pretty good.... I do recall an incident in my late 20s on a rooftop where I was setting off firecrackers. Got to the point of lighting them in bags in my hand and as I'd turn my head to avoid getting blasted the loud cracks seemed to particularly impact my right ear, which is the side of the head I get CHs. For years afterward I'd feel a numbness/headache/loss of hearing in that ear before my first real bout of CHs some 18-20 years later. I think I was having "proto-clusters" before my first major 2 month-long cycle. At that point I was diagnosed, but I always had the nagging suspicion those damn 'crackers had something to do with it all. s |

Title: Re: 'Nother Poll Post by eyes_afire on Jul 28th, 2003, 6:01pm I've had head injury, but it was probably more like 15 years before CH. Got knocked out cold playing... soccer of all things (head-to-head collision with my best friend ::)). Bad headache, short term memory loss... a certain concussion although back then we were kids and we didn't care about concussions. ... now that I think about it, I suspect that my first CH symptoms occured all the way back when I was having 'eye problems'. I had to stop wearing contact lenses back in the early 1990's because I had a persistently red and irritated left eye (CH side... headaches were not uncommon but of course I wasn't paying attention way back then). I was being treated by a top-notch opthamologist. She was concerned I was having a bad reaction but she could never determine the problem and nothing ever really helped. So I don't know... maybe the concussion was more like 10 years prior...??? --- Steve |

Title: polish fever Post by rumplestiltskin on Jul 28th, 2003, 7:02pm My CH began after a severe neck/upper back injury at work 8 years ago. In retrospect...I shoulda done that workers comp thing. Cooincidence? God ain't talkin. I can't ignore what happened to me...butt I know I am in a teensy minority. This theoretical "tie-in to trauma" fishing line has been tossed out here at CH.com mor'n a few times over the years. Not totally black and white...more of a grey matter. Due to the lack of immediate CH following an injury, the numbers of "bubble people" with CH and the growing evidence that the CH cause is a "central brain mechanism" malfunction.....I am forced to concede that at this juncture....it is my opinion that there ARE people who are predisposed to CH (hypothalymussedup) and yet for some reason do not develop the full blown Syndrome till some catalist occurs...like a bitch slap.... to trigger it....like me. I don't know a hormone from an angel cry...so the pathological/neurological/chemical stuff is wasted on me ...I greatly admire and appreciate those who strive to figure that shit out...like my Georgia and Ueli, and Bob P, old timers like Gary G. and the rest of you eggheads. Title: Re: 'Nother Poll Post by firebrix on Jul 28th, 2003, 7:07pm Mopar whacked his head pretty hard on a huge H beam about three months before his ha. started. He was wearing a hard hat, but it was a good whack. We wondered whether it may have had some effect but both his doc and neuro thought not. I, on the other hand have had so many serious head injuries including two fractures, it isn't funny - yet I am Ch free, (but get those unmentionable ha, due to the crashes.) Interesting.............. firebrix |

Title: Re: 'Nother Poll Post by ozzman on Jul 29th, 2003, 6:58am I'm in the process of analyzing all this Like I was saying before I was interreupted by a thought, much like individual cycles need a catalyst for the cycle to start (too much stress, too little sleep, longest day of the year, shortest day of the year, blue balls, whatever..) perhaps CHs, for people " predisposed" to them need a certain something to get them in motion. It could be head injury, or say like in N4H for what I remember, he got his after being at some mines in Peru (diff. Latitude, barometric pressure, lack of oxygen, etc) I'm going to have to keep reading on the hypothalamus, it's too interesting. Ozzy |

I am so glad I found you guys.....It helps me sort through the stuff and find out what's worth trying..... Love and blessings, Karen |
