Title: Capsaicin Cream
Post by stuey on Jul 15th, 2003, 8:28am
The neuro I went to last night said capsaicin cream which is made from peppers which is available over the counter put in the nostril that is clogged or running during an attack works for some people to abort the attacks although it burns in some people.  He also said a study is going to be done for a non-burning type of capsaicin in the future.  I searched here and didn't find anything so who has this helped ???

Stuey I tried that technique!  It didn't work at all!  I bought some of the cream and used it just inside the nose and even tried rubbing it on my temple and my feet (the idea being that's where the nerves are that affect the head etc).  Nada.

I think what he may be referring to about the so called non burning is the civamide clinical trials.  From what I've heard and read about the results they aren't too good.

THanks Cat.  I think at this point I would probably rub horseshit in my nostril if the doctor said that would help. :)

True.  It couldn't be as bad as the CHs.

Besides, even if I did try it and it didn't work, You'd still have to try it cuz I have CPH.

*evil grin*  so you go first.

You know what's so f__cked up about these things is I've been having them since late April and still get them albeit less than say a month ago.  I don't even know if I am episodic or chronic.

yeah unfortunately for CH there is a fine line between Episodic and Chronic, for PH, you either have them everyday or you don't

chronic.

Unable to sustain two weeks of pain free life in the course of one year while being med free.

That should help ya Stuey. If your not med free then you wont be able to tell anyway.

Well I tried this out last night.  Burned burned burned for over an hour and I coughed and sputtered.  I won't do that again but will put it on joints for arthritis.  I can't imagine using this and have CH pain and this on top of it and there being a possibility it won't help.  Damn that.  Stuey

I hate doctors that give half-assed advice...
1. Capsaicin needs to be applied....with a 6" Q-tip onto the back of the sinus cavity, against the ganglion nerve complex. It should be done several times a day until the nerves change their pain signals. It's a "build-up" sort of thing.
2. Burns "some" people????......I wouldn't want to meet anyone it "didn't" burn, in a dark ally.
3. Results weren't very good to begin with so why they're looking into spending time and money for a non-burning type is beyond me.
4. Even using it for arthritis (works on the same principle of blocking the pain signals over time) it has mixed/limited results where it isn't trying to end the pain involved in clusters. Sort of like making a better tasting aspirin tablet for cluster sufferers.IMHO

This has been talked about a lot here. Did you use the search at the very top of this page? Under the "ches" of "Clusterheadaches.com?
You might try searching under "substance P" since this is the involved chemical.
I've tried it as a preventative for about a month and as an abortive. It didn't help me. Paco, on the other hand, gets great results with it (he uses hot sauce and not the cream, if I mremember correctly).

Ya but!!!, Paco also claims smoking ants is a great abortive. although they must be soaked in sour mash for 24 hours then sun dried.

Go figure....Hicks ;D
