Title: Re: rabid catipillars Post by eyes_afire on Jul 12th, 2003, 9:42am Hi Pam. You were probably not bitten, but rather stung. Several caterpillar species have evolved hollow urticating hairs which can contain venom. The most notables that come to my mind are several species in the Family Saturniidae (giant silkworm moths) and the smaller unusual looking saddleback caterpillar (and other species in the Family Limacodidae). They both live in your neck of the woods and there are probably others: http://www.uky.edu/Agriculture/Entomology/entfacts/misc/ef003.htm http://ag.arizona.edu/urbanipm/insects/stingingcaterpillars.html http://www.forestpests.org/publichealth/StingingC.html |

Title: Re: rabid catipillars Post by Donna on Jul 12th, 2003, 4:11pm We have Saddlebacks here in Fla. One of my kids was bitten and boy does it hurt! He swelled, got a rash and was sick to his stomach. They're now on my vined plants...it's that time of the year, and other than getting near enough to put poison on the plants, we are staying clear of them. Once bitten, twice shy. |

Title: Re: rabid catipillars Post by oringkid on Jul 12th, 2003, 4:24pm Eyes, you took the words right outta my mouth. Yep there are a few varieties of caterpillar that have poisonous spines. Benedryl should still help, but if it doesn't get better in a day or two or gets worse, get thee to a doctor. It is best not to touch any caterpillar that has what looks like spines or hair or fur. (I may be wrong, but I think there is even a species of caterpillar that looked like what we called wooly bears that has poisonous hairs/spines/fur. Ever been bitten by a praying mantis or a grasshopper? LOL! No poison, but can definitely let you know they are irritated! Sherry who learned early about "crudapelters" (That was my first attempt as a child at the word. My aunt who has a big time fear and loathing of caterpillars (not unlike my fear and loathing of spiders...STEVE!) said that my word was the best word ever for them LOL!) |

Title: Re: rabid catipillars Post by cootie on Jul 12th, 2003, 5:29pm Holy crap......I didn't realize them things were venomous.......thanx fer the info !!! Yeah I got bit in my necka the woods alright.....by a mangey lookin spiney yuk yellow one......this one had the real long double black hair horn lookin deals at each end only. Prolly was a double headed cootie infested coot biter creepy crawler......swell. My neck looks NASTY...got a solid rash the sizea my hand. Went on a poker run taday and everyone prolly thought I had creepy crude....blahhhh !!! One good rash leads to anuther Pam |

Title: Re: rabid catipillars Post by eyes_afire on Jul 12th, 2003, 7:25pm Actually, 2 of those links say that Benedryl won't help. I don't know, I've never been stung by a caterpillar. Yes Sherry, I've been bitten by a praying mantis... trying to move it to a safer location. I was surprised. I was also surprised when I was bitten by a grasshopper, but I deserved that one... I needed him for entomology class. I think you're right, there are some venomous wooly bear caterpillars. re spiders: Spiders get free roam of my apartment... any enemies of flies are a friend of mine. Too bad I don't have any spiders big enough or numerous enough to help control the fucking earwigs that invade at night. --- Steve, one of many... |

Title: Re: rabid catipillars Post by oringkid on Jul 12th, 2003, 7:33pm I hate spiders.... any kind.... But!! Out here, we tend to have lots and lots of Black Widows..... Title: Re: rabid catipillars Post by catlind on Jul 12th, 2003, 7:37pm Eyes I have an over abundance of spiders here that you are more than welcome to take!!!! Hate those damn arachnids We have black widows and brown recluse here Sherry, joy oh bliss :-/ Cat |
||
Title: Re: rabid catipillars Post by eyes_afire on Jul 12th, 2003, 7:44pm I'm sure Sherry has even more brown recluse spiders down there. I believe they are being accidentally transported to the northeast, someone at work suffered from what I believe to be the bite of a brown recluse. It ain't pretty. But really, brown recluse and black widow are the only 2 North American species you have to be careful with. What a great thread you started, Pam :D I hope you're feeling better. Cat: you can give them to me at the convention ;) --- Steve, one of many... |

Title: Re: rabid catipillars Post by catlind on Jul 12th, 2003, 8:00pm They're all yours eyes! LOL I'll catch them all in a bug basket and you can take em home with ya! Too bad that won't stop them coming around. Yeah I didn't think the brown recluse was native to the northeast, but I have killed 2 of them here, and one girl got bit by one when they were on a field exercise, it had crawled into her sleeping bag. You're right, it's not pretty. Course, in Germany we had a spider show up in the kitchen that was the size of a small dog hehe Cat |
||
Title: Re: rabid catipillars Post by oringkid on Jul 12th, 2003, 8:09pm Well thanks a lot STEVE!!!! I didn't need to know THAT! I've been bitten by a spider who's bite was very similar to that of a brown recluse... boy, ya just gotta love that necrotic tissue eh? Takes literally years to completely heal. And Cat..... I ain't NEVER goin' to Germany now!!! Sherry |
||
Title: Re: rabid catipillars Post by catlind on Jul 12th, 2003, 8:14pm LOL Sherry! You should have seen me, I was only over visiting Clark while he was stationed there. He called out, "don't come in the kitchen" .. so of course I went in the kitchen. Saw this tarantula size spider (looked like a wolf spider) and screamed and it ran under the stove. I jumped on the table and refused to get down til it was dead LOL Clark was spraying it with raid and I told him to step on it, his reply was "Fuck no!!! It will eat my foot!" LOL Just stay in a hotel and not a house where they have the chance to live and grow, and grow, and grow.... hehe |

Title: Re: rabid catipillars Post by oringkid on Jul 12th, 2003, 8:19pm ROTFLMFAO!! I can definitely relate! Sherry |

Title: Re: rabid catipillars Post by eyes_afire on Jul 12th, 2003, 8:39pm Sherry, that may have been a brown recluse bite. Cat, you should see the size of the spiders in Puerto Rico. Big enough to eat the coquis (frogs). --- Esteban... |

She must of mention'd it to the doc before he came in the room cuz when I started to ask him about it he said....oh the catipillar bite ? I felt so stupid but he said there is sum sort of widow catipillar he knows of that is venomous around here. I ain't found a pic of it yet on the internet....lite yellow spiney body with those long black hair horns that stuck out. My rash is still bad.....doesn't itch as much but I have a HUGE lump and rash all around it hand size. Entire thing is creepin me out.....esp since I still have the lump and itch all over off and on spells. Been takein benydryl at nite. One bitten twice shy Pam |
