Title: Card-carrying clusterhead
Post by Linda_Howell on Jul 10th, 2003, 4:49pm

One of the things we all dread is getting hit in public, and lately I seem to have had my share of that. No place to run or hide, and people staring at me or asking 20 questions.  A friend sent me this after hearing about another rough week-end,  and I have printed it out in a smaller format, and intend to have it laminated and keep it in my wallet for just those times.

  Tell me what you think.

   My name is---------

I suffer from a little known illness called cluster headaches that causes extreme pain.  It is not  life threatening, althought it may appear so.  I am not on drugs or alcohol.  I may need assistance in getting to my medicationor administering it.  I will be O.K. in 1 to 2 hours.  Please do not ask me questions or request I do anything until the pain has passed, as I cannot give you my full attention.  The best assistance, is to do as I request, or leave me alone.  Thank you for your understanding.

Linda, I'm sorry you are getting hit hard right now, especially in public.  To me, there is something humiliating about people watching me....when there is no place to hide.  The card sounds like a really good idea.  Your friend sounds like a real good one to send you something like that.  The written equivalent of a medical ID bracelet.  Plus, it's another great way to spread the word about ch's.....seems that sometimes, the written word works better than trying to explain things verbally.

I remember the card idea. The reason it's good is that it's a way to let ER types know you're not insane, a junkie or worse.  Epileptics carrry them because if you're found having an attack and can't answer, it lets others know what's going on when the medics get there. So many of us, after a seizure cannot talk for a time and a card can make this so much easier. MDs, addresses and most importantly, a list of drugs and doses should be there. Family and friend's numbers are good too.

To the ER  Staff

I belong to a large CH family. We have your home address. Currently your home is surrounded by a gang of CHers. Treat me properly and with dignity or each of the CHers now gathered at your home will trigger CH attacks on your front lawn. Please bring in small children and pets as this will not be pretty. No one will be harmed but your neighbors will be pissed and your lawn ornaments endangered of being booted into orbit. Oxygen and imitrex please.

Thanks everyone, but let me explain something.  I don't have a cycle, I'm chronic, so it's inevitable that I am going to get hit in public at times, especially in the summer when I'm out and going places.

While I totally agree that my very first thought is the same as most of yours....."leave me the fuck alone and get out of my face and stop asking me questions".....that's probably not the smarest thing I could do when confronted with a Highway Patrol guy standing in back of me in line for coffee last week.  Tears were streaming down my face, head down, swaying back and forth a little, praying that the girl making my espresso would hurry the fuck up.......and this cop is giving me the LOOK.......The one that says, "I wonder if I should give her a breath-alizer""

So situations like that is what prompted this card thing.

Also, it seems to me that if I were ever to go to the ER, it could be helpful there also, especially if it was signed by my DR.

              Love you all.   Linda

That card would have came in handy when one afternoon I was in a shopping center parking lot banging my head against the steering wheel.  The police tried to arrest me for Public Intoxication.  :o

Dang, that's a good idea! If my wife & kids weren't with me I could have used a card like that a couple of days ago. We were on the shuttle bus on the way to the airport when I got hit 30 seconds after the bus doors closed. Luckily there weren't too many people on the bus with us and I just leaned forward in my seat and tried to hide out. 25 minutes later we arrived at the airport and I stumbled off the bus and slumped down in an airport chair.

I can only imagine what I would have looked like if I had been traveling alone and airport security had gotten a good look at me. I'd probably still be in lockup somewhere.

That is a wonderful idea...

I'm flying to Arizona next weekend and am a little concerned about what to do when I'm on the plane if I get a CH... The card would be a lot easier to show a Flight Attendant then having to explain and shoot up without them understanding.

Besides telling her to "fuck off" would probably get me arrested by an air marshall or something.

"This is not a hijack attempt.... I am not threatening the flight crew with my syringe"....

Good idea....but.... I can see me trying to find/get out that card now while being hit....

If I'm at a pain level that I can't talk, I will have a bit of trouble getting (or even deciding to attempt to get) a card out that explains it....

Maybe have it tattooed on my forehead? LOL  J/k.

Or, seriously,  put it on a chain attached to my purse, or around my neck... easy access.

Good idea, sis...i have often thought of having some type of bracelet made like diabetics wear...i think one of the hardest things about chs for me is getting hit in front of people..it is humiliating to have people see you in that much pain and not understand..i think the lack of understanding is what is so embarrassing though...love you sis, know you are in my prayers...smiles,nancyc

Hello.

After reading through this thread, I would like to suggest that it woulld be a good idea (exscpecialy for the chronic suffers) to look into getting a Medic Alert braclet.  This comes with a wallet card with critical info on it and the bracelete  will be there for the paramedics to see if neccasary.

I have one of these for something else which is why I am suggesting it.

I have had attacks while at work and it is no fun explaining to everyone who passes by what is going on.

Linda:
Thanks for posting what your friend has sent.  I've had cycles in the past, and I'm terrified its becoming chronic (my doc and the info she gave me indicated it could happen).  There's been many times I've had to pull over on the side of the road or a parking lot while driving and I am amazed that no one has ever called the cops or that one hasn't seen me.
The card would be great to keep in my glovebox and purse.  I tried to keep it from everyone at work - but I finally told those that had to know (management) and co-workers I interact with frequently.  And as the case in offices it got out to EVERYONE.  But the card will definitely come in handy when I'm out and about.  Thank you.

LOL, good one Pam.

The note from the Doctor deal works, takes the ER out of the diagnoses part and they can treat quickly, but it has to look official and fit in your wallet. I carried one for years until TREX came out. Don't go to the ER no mo Lee.

The correct response to this is not to give them a card but  to sever one of their limbs and say" Oh, you've cut yourself? want a bandaid?"
