Title: does weed help?
Post by DM on Jun 28th, 2003, 10:18pm
hello, im new to this site. I found some info on ch's and was kind of interested to find out more info, because its sounds like a complete nightmare. I have had 3 migraines before, probably in 6 month intervals, but once i started smoking weed, i havnt had one in more than 6 years. I do know (from reading through this site) that ch's are much worse than a migraine, and hopefully i dont somehow get it, but maybe weed could help?? or mushrooms or some herbal drug. I'm now informed about this problem so if I ever meet a ch sufferer, I won't try and relate my problems to his/hers, lol. Thx for reading, and take care. :-[ but let me know if you have tried marijuana to help, it may work?? im sure its been tried though.

Good Morning DM

I received your PM this morning and answered it.  However,  had I read your post first I would have added the following....

This site is for Cluster Headache sufferers and their supporters.

You're probably a nice young man....but if your looking to get "hooked up" or for information on mushrooms or herbal drugs this is not the place you need to be.  That said you need to get back on the road...you've pulled into the wrong house.

From the new visitors page;

Looking for a source for legal (or otherwise) drugs? Cool. Here's what you do. Move your mouse up to the BACK button of your browser, click on it and go back where you came from. Clusterheads would give anything NOT to have to take meds. We have absolutely no interest in abetting some junkie's self-abuse. (This statement may sound harsh, but believe it or not, we have had people trying to deal drugs on the message board)

Anytime I ever smoked the wacky tabacky, it gave me no relief whatsoever. In fact, made my head real stuffy and brought on an attack.

This is a rather shallow statement. The only reason "drugs" like weed are illegal, is because the goverment can't controll it. Drugs like Valium or Xanax are taken by millions every single day for this or that, but are "O.K." because they are controlled. Shrooms seem to may sport a chance at helping someone with an attack Ree, but the goverment in all it's wisdom have deemed them illegal, therefore it will never prevent a C.H.?
Narcotics are drugs, illegal or not IMO. It is rather lame for someone like DM to come on here, a non-CH sufferer, talking about weed. I think the majority of people on here could get plenty of "legal" drugs, way more powerfull than weed on any givin visit to the Doc.
Some may choose not too.

I don't take any narcotics. Believe me, I would tell you if I did. Don't get me wrong, I aint' been no puritan my whole life, but it is very easy for me to request pretty much whatever I want from my Doctor. Fuck it I say. I can walk around addicted to dope and be semi-headache free, or I can walk around with my brains still in order and keep on keepin' on.

Heh, no, im not at all looking to get hooked up with illegal drugs, i've got that base covered! ;D :o It's just that I cannot believe any person on this earth, short ofSaddam or Bush  ;) has to deal with such unfair, torture like pain, and for no known reason as to why,or how, how long, etc. I think this site has to be visited by a lot of doctors, and let them read through this site, and im sure that will give them incentive to all they can to research this illness and find a cure to help you great people overcome the battle of the beast. Hang in there, although I don't know any of you, I think this world is even more unfair now that I have ever believed it to be before. I'm sorry, I actually have no real reason to be here, so I will leave you gusy alone, just know, that you are in my prayers now, becuase like I said, no one deserves that much indescribable pain. Good luck peeps! :-/

I understand what you meant jonny. I am just saying as for myself, I choose not to use narcotics. My wife is a licensed pharmacy technician (spic). She knows ALL the docs in this area, and has spoken to them numerous times about my affliction. They all seem to have this med or that up their sleeve, but for me, at the moment, I am sick of meds, let alone narcotics. Last batch I was on (Verapamil, Caffergot and Imitrex injections) did not carry much side affects (minus the heart problems) and did not help too much with anything really. I do sometimes wonder if a big huge line of Cocaine would not help during an atack, but fourtunatley I have a cute litle daughter, a nice home, a good job and have no intentions of becoming an addict or slave because of the beast. Fuck him, I like my life.

P.S. jonny, you look like the type of dude I would hang out with!

DM,

There is evidence that certain cannabanoids do act on the very same pain receptors that are active during a migraine.  Sadly, research in this area is very limited, but they are making progress.  Here in California, one can get a 'reccomendation' for the use cannabis to help with symptoms.

CH, unfortunately, seems to be aggrivated by cannabis in most people.  This may be due to a number of factors, not the least of which is the lack of a standardized form of cannabis.  There are endless varaieties, each with different chemical composition and strength.  Then, there are different ways to consume the plant, making the results vary even more.

Bottom line is, those who partake will probably continue to do so and claim it helps.  Those who don't will probably not start.  Those who have CH triggered by pot will probably stop, but you never know.  I wouldn't go so far as to say that it is bad or good in any case yet.

DM,

I am a periodic CH sufferer, in between cycles, I often get migraine. As you said the migraine pales in comparison to CH. I often say to my friends, it's only a migraine thank God.

In younger days weed triggered more than a few CH cycles, and not knowing any better I would continue smoking during cycle/ It made everything worse. Intensity/frequency of attacks etc.

I think that you probably have stumbled upon a site whose members don't receive advice from the uninformed, well.

I wouldn't know first hand however, since my personal experience with this site (since my first post) has been so perfect. Everyone took to me immediately, and have agreed with everything I've said.

Seriously, thanks for your concern and the prayers you have promised.

Careful, irony gets misunderstood here! ;D

DM, it was good of you to be concerned enough to register and post. Your suggestion was not wrong, it's just that people here have tried almost everything.

BTW folks, especially those who shove vinegar and blue cheese in various orifices, did you know that there is research now suggesting that shoving extract of chillies up your nose looks promising for Ch treatment???

I'm serious with the last bit

For me, it doesn't help, nor does it hurt. I haven't found that it aggravates my CH at all, unlike alcohol.  I can't even have a glass of wine with dinner without it bringing on a cluster. I know some people don't agree with the use of canabis and that's cool...I respect everyones choices. But a couple of things are worth noting here....before anyone starts throwing the term 'addict' around, smoking a joint or two a month ihardly constitutes being one. Canabis, in my opinion, is a herb, not a drug and what can I say, I come from British Columbia...

agreed, pothead or stoner etc. are pretty much the only proper terms for a chronic weed smoker. Junkie or addict, nope, don't think so. Thats for chemicals and shit like that. Weed is god's way to let one chill out and enjoy life.  8)
