Does anyone here know why the Imigran(trex) nasals are such a high dose at 20mg?

Every other way of administering triptans is much lower than this and research suggests only small amounts of a triptan are needed to stop attacks.

I ask because although they work very quickly for me, I am not enjoying some nasty side effects from them when I VERY rarely use them and it feels as if the dosage is too high for my body

Pretty sure it is the concentration of the dosage and how fast the medicine gets to the bloodstream.
RE: Imitrex/Imigran...
i.e. Injections...6mg (fastest to bloodstream)
Inhaler....20mg (fast to bloodstream)
Tablets.....50mg or 100mg....(not as fast to bloodstream compared to above)

It has to do with the rate of absorption through the nasal membranes. Alot of the dose is lost due to dripping, mucus flow etc, therefore a higher dose is needed to achieve the desired results. Too bad there wasn't a way of dividing it up like with the injectables though......

If you do that the med isn't getting through the nasal membrane where it supposed to go.

If I'm not mistaken, there is a 5mg dosage size (although I've never seen it so I can't confirm its existence).

It is already in the nasal membrane Don...when it starts to congest or drip after a minute or two...breath in deeply, do not blow out into kleenex, and swallow the med....works for me 10 out of 10 times!!!

It would take longer through stomach digestion. Nasal absorption would be more important at 20mg when waking with it underway playing catch up.

I have taken 10 mg imitrix ns before and it works. My dr. will write me out scripts for injections, 20 and 10 mg ns. That helps and works wonders. I will take 10 mg and if after 10 min ha still there I take another 10mg else if ha gone I don't. Try it you will like it.

i have found that with the nasal spray, you want as much as you can to absorb through the nose:
1) it works quicker
2) doesnt taste as bad
3) doesn't effect stomach
4) IT WORKS QUICKER!!!
just pinch of the nostral and pray....

after a year pf, i am now on week #4 of 2-3 per day, and the nasal spray is loosing effectiveness...

everything that i find that works, eventually becomes inadequate. switched to the injections and am looking into O2.

Saw GP today and have ditched the Imigran nasals as I am sure they are too strong for me. I am genuinley not trying to make you jealous because our medical system is different and you probably can't afford all these but she is great and has armed me with a barrage so I can choose to use what I think is best depending on the circumstances (she thinks, quite rightly, that I know more about CH than she does and she is a good enough doctor secure in her own abilities not to mind!)

1st Line attack: Have enough 02 to last weeks-large and portable tanks + 2 of Ben's special kit for delivery (it's the best!)

2nd Line attack: Have Frova or Zomig pills to choose from while using 02 to try and block attacks for a while and buy some sleep- Frova still having some useful prophylactic reports from other sufferers.

3rd Line attack:Imigran injections and Zomig nasals for emergencies

The blessed woman has put them all on 5 repeats as well so I can order 5 more times without an appointment.
