Title: Exercise or not?
Post by birdman on Jun 23rd, 2005, 10:41am
I am an epsodic clusterhead for 19 years.  I take 1200mg of verapamil as preventitive and O2 and Imitrex as abortive(also pepper spray).  Does anyone feel that exercise and increased heart rate helps or hurts?  Afraid with all the verapamil to try and get the heart going but can't stand getting fat and lazy.  Any suggestions?

Prolonged aerobic exercise is a sure trigger for me and some others when in cycle. I used to think it was just getting hot from exercise, but have triggered in a nice cool gym after 40 minutes of exercise

On the other hand some actually find it to be an abortive. Go figure. The answer to clusters is like playing pin the tail on the donkey on the tilt-a-whirl.

I have found that it really depends on the level of my headache.  Up to a 4 or 5, I will force myself to exercise even though I'm very unmotivated.  It hasn't made things worse, and sometimes makes things better.  But any HA above a 5 keeps me away from exercise completely, at least from fear that it's on its way to getting a lot worse.

I think that exercise is a helper for me the problem is that I wake with the HA and I just can't gather up the energy to go and exercise.  By the time I feel somewhat better I then must battle the heat and humidity and then I have to work so I fail in the exercise catagory maybe things will change when I am going to school and not working 2-10 all the time............

I can only beat off so fast [smiley=laugh.gif]

Seriously though....sometimes it helps and sometimes it exaserbates it.....go figure.

Also, the dosage on the verapamil seems very high!!!
I think the research from Goadspy suggests 960 maximum, however, if not having ill effects, it's helping and the doctor is monitoring your heart then I guess do whatcha have to do.

Just be carfeul when tapering....slowly.....don't need heartattack!!!

Won't die from CH but some of the meds we take are so damn dangerous.

Best,

Eric

I check my BP at home all the time, usually at 118/60.  Pulse is around 72.  When I taper I do it VVVEEEERRRRYYYY slowly.  Sometimes feels like there is a lead weight on my chest.  Just like when you are getting xray-s at the dentist.
Does anyone think spreading the pills out through the day would help?

You're supposed to put clothes on with them sneekers.  No wonder the neighbors think you're nuts [smiley=laugh.gif]

From a more serious standpoint, I'v come across more than a few articles from sufferers that insist increasing their heart rate and respiration helps shorten attacks and reduce frequency of attacks.
