Title: Prednisone side effects? Post by Judge_Smails on Apr 19th, 2005, 10:10am About 3-5 days after I tapered off of my prednisone I developed very bad acne on my upper chest, neck and upper back. I'm 34 and aside from the occasional pimple I haven't had to deal with acne since high school. I'm assuming that since it's a steroid that there is a connection between the prednisone and my breakout. Anoyone else have this issue? |

Title: Re: Prednisone side effects? Post by Judge_Smails on Apr 19th, 2005, 11:03am Actually the head's doing much better thanks! I guess the other stuff is just small potatoes compared to the CH - right! I've only got about a week or so left in my cycle and I've only been getting hit once every other day or so and even those are pretty mild. The past week or so has been pretty good, not sure if that's just the Topamax finally kicking in or the Pred knocking my cycle out of whack but I'll take it! |

Title: Re: Prednisone side effects? Post by Bionic_Daddy on Apr 19th, 2005, 11:12am Hello, I was on Prednisone daily for 1 1/2 years - 20mg. I broke out with acne on my chest, back & legs. I'm 40 years old & after I stopped the Pred. my acne cleared. Acne is a small price to pay to stay PF. You may also have nights sweats, kidney pain ( Drink fluids all day ) & swelling in the knees. Good Luck, Pred. was my ONLY savior. Bionic Daddy |

Title: Re: Prednisone side effects? Post by Bob P on Apr 19th, 2005, 11:49am Pred tends to shut down your immune system and makes it harder for your body to fight infections. Hence the acne. Hub just told me that it put pimples on his face and made him whack his puppy! |

Title: Re: Prednisone side effects? Post by Judge_Smails on Apr 19th, 2005, 1:56pm Thanks guys (and gals). I didn't put 2+2 together because I didn't break out until I basically tapered off the Pred, plus with the CH's I kind of had bigger fish to fry, but now that my cycle is almost over (knock on wood) I was just curious. |

Title: Re: Prednisone side effects? Post by Bob P on Apr 19th, 2005, 2:04pm Pred side effects are mostly dose and length of use dependant. high dose/long term - risky low dose/ long term - better but risky high dose/short term - better low dose/short term - best but probably least useful |

Title: Re: Prednisone side effects? Post by samsara on Apr 19th, 2005, 8:25pm Wow, I can't imagine pred for 1.5 years. I took it for one week and I was unhappy... Let me clarify. I was much happier than with CH's, but my knees were KILLING me. Popping, swollen, crackly... all weird. don't remember acne tho... |

Title: Re: Prednisone side effects? Post by Pinkfloyd on Apr 25th, 2005, 11:39pm Medscape.... NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Apr 22 - Of the various agents that are used to treat respiratory disease, oral steroids and theophylline are most likely to increase the risk of cardiac arrhythmias, Spanish and US researchers observe in the May issue of Epidemiology. Numerous reports have linked respiratory medications with rhythm disorders, but data from epidemiologic studies is lacking, lead author Dr. Consuelo Huerta, from Centro Espanol de Investigacion Farmacoepidemiologica, Madrid and colleagues note. To investigate this topic further, the researchers assessed respiratory drug use in 710 patients who experienced a rhythm disorder and in 5000 matched controls. The subjects were drawn from the UK General Practice Research Database and ranged in age from 10 to 79 years. Inhaled steroid use had no effect on the risk of arrhythmias, the researchers found. By contrast, oral steroid use and, to a lesser extent, short-term theophylline use were tied to an elevated risk of arrhythmias. Short-term use of oral steroids and theophylline raised the risk of atrial fibrillation by 2.7- and 1.8-fold, the authors note. Short-term use of theophylline and long-term use of oral steroids increased the risk of supraventricular tachycardia by 4.0- and 2.1-fold. Use of oral steroids and beta-adrenoceptors was linked to 3.2- and 7.1-fold elevated risks of ventricular arrhythmias. The findings, say the authors, "are consistent with certain suspected dysrhythmic effects of theophyllines, supraventricular tachycardia associated with antimuscarinics, and ventricular arrhythmias associated with beta-adrenoreceptors." In addition, there is "an association of oral steroids with several types of arrhythmia." Atrial fibrillation affected the greatest number of patients, the team conclude, "but ventricular arrhythmias may be the most serious of the disorders." Epidemiology 2005;16:360-366. |

Title: Re: Prednisone side effects? Post by cynthy on Apr 26th, 2005, 9:03am I was on prednisone for 2 years, 4mg 2x daily,, you really don't want to go there , I now have to take fosamax for bone loss the rest of my life also am having a problem with my adrenal gland,, it is not producing enough cortisone, not sure what will be done, have to see a specialist next month,, The steroid did help, about 70% of the time i was painfree, i gained over 20 lbs and i looked like a chipmonk ! one day it just stopped working, i could have increased the dosage but i didn't, it wasn't that my doctor hadn't tried everything else, we did,, nothing worked,, as soon as i would start to taper i would get hit, be very careful with this drug, some of the side effects will last a lifetime.. research your options, learn everything you can,, start here on this board, it has a world of useful info.. good luck and be careful. pfdan cindy |
