Title: Midrin & Ibuprophen Post by dwaters118 on Apr 8th, 2005, 4:14pm I'm brand new around here and only on my first cycle (God I hope I'm not going to be chronic!!). Been in cycle since mid-Feb and my insurance, like most, limits amounts of triptans. Out of desperation, and a real aversion to pain, I asked my PCP to prescribe Midrin, which was on the migraine therapy list and VERY cheap as prescription meds go -- my neurologist thought that sounded okay to him. After some trial and error, I have found that 2 Midrin and 800mg Ibuprophen work for me almost as well as Imitrex 50s. I now use the Midrin as my abortive first attempt and go to the basement and do some laundry (something about cold environment and getting the blood going I think...). Now I can save my Imitrex and Zomig for the K7-9s that still hit with depressing frequency. I haven't seen anythin here about Midrin...... Anyone else try it? David |

Title: Re: Midrin & Ibuprophen Post by Margi on Apr 8th, 2005, 4:20pm Hi David - welcome. You'll probably find better (and quicker) relief from trying oxygen as an abortive. You must be talking about the Imitrex pills at that dose. It's also available in a nasal spray at 5mg and 20mg doses. Works quicker and fewer side effects than the pills. Watch out with the ibuprophen - it can be quite hard on the tummy. And, not to worry - you're not chronic. You're not defined as chronic until you've been in cycle for 12 months without 30 days of unmedicated pain freedom. Best of luck to you - and explore oxygen therapy - it honestly has been a consistently success option amongst clusterheads. |

Title: Re: Midrin & Ibuprophen Post by Bionic_Daddy on Apr 8th, 2005, 4:39pm David, Be careful! Ibuprofen can trigger rebound HA's in my case. Excedrin does not contain ibuprofen, excedrin migrane does help me. I've been chronic for 5 years and I have to rotate medications for results. |

Title: Re: Midrin & Ibuprophen Post by Karla on Apr 8th, 2005, 5:54pm midrin did nothing for my ch. It does work on my 2 sons migraines. I would recomend trying oxygen and imitrix nasal spray. with the ns I have relief in 6 -10 min. |

Title: Re: Midrin & Ibuprophen Post by rumplestiltskin on Apr 12th, 2005, 1:22am I took it for years ...triple the normal dose washed down with vodka...what can i say...alcoholics with clusters do weird shit...it did work...butt not well...mostly the ch just ran it's course. Midrin has been mentioned a modicum of times over the 6 years i have been here...do a search. It is certainly not a widely used or often used CH abortive. It sure stopped working for me. only you can determine what is best for you. I refused to settle for anything other than no pain.... in my humble opinion there are much more effective treatments available...they can be found here at ch.com take what ya need.... den |

Title: Re: Midrin & Ibuprophen Post by TxBasslady on Apr 13th, 2005, 2:14am Ibuprofen seems to give me rebound headaches. Excedrin Migraine works great for me when shadows are lurking. Good luck, and PF vibes, Jean |

Title: Re: Midrin & Ibuprophen Post by dwaters118 on Apr 29th, 2005, 9:22pm Thanks for the replies and welcomes people. I can't begin to tell you how comforting it is that you are here to help. I post here as an update...... I dropped the Midrin and the Ibuprophen.... as advised, I got rebounds and no relief from the Midrin. My neurologist got me on Verapamil and Topomax and thanks to this message board I have just finished my first week on Kudzu. I am not sure whether I should credit the Topomax, the Kudzu, or the end of the cycle, but I have had two PFNAD and haven't had to inject the Imitrex in three days. Keeping the fingers crossed, the preventatives going, and researching alternatives. |
