Not really suggesting this as a therapy to try ... trepanation (the cutting of a hole in the head) - it's still being practiced. From a humorous article on the things people will do in search of headache relief:

Absolutely fascinating Floridian, inspite of the humo(u)r.

Before I knew what was happening with this dreadful condition, I once contemplated 'self-trepanation': with a Black & Decker drill that was scarilly handy at the time.

Interesting that kudso was mentioned too.

Hey, it seemed to work for that guy in the movie, "Pi." LOL
