Hi Folks,

Long time sufferer, 1st time poster. I've been on vaca from our friend for the last 4 years, but the other night I got whacked again and I'm in a constant state of 'feeling it coming in the background'...not looking forward to the next visit...

Anyway, I have some leftover Imitrex injectors from the last time (4-5 years old) and was wondering if anyone knows if they are still viable to use. My insurer would only allow 6 per month (what a joke), so I hoarded them in the past as a stopgap until I can get to the doctor for meds and past their break-in period....

Hi Bob,

The injectors should have an expiration date on them. If they're 4-5 yrs. old, then I feel pretty sure they are out of date. I recommend you call your doc and ask him. That being said, if it were me getting hit and I couldn't get a hold of oxygen or fresh trex- well, I'd probably try them.

Hey Bob,

Do not take this as a recommendation - I have used trex injections that were 3 years past expiration date that I had hoarded. They worked just fine for me, but it was me who was taking the chance.

Not a Doc but, I just used some that expired in aug, 2002. They seem to work just find. I have the same problem with limits per months on the shots also. By the way I also just started back into a cycle after 4 years. Thought I had out grown them, may be one day.(I pray!!!!!!!!)

YES - They are still good.

I'm an every 3-5 years episodic. Had the same question for my doc. Wanted at least one new script a year, so I'd always be prepared.

He said, and I quote ... "Don't waste your money that way."
Almost all prescriptions except certain ones for cancer treatment or specific cardiovascular diseases are good for at least 10 years past their dates of expiration. The worst that can happen is that they lose a little potency. The point being, they still work. Most importantly - they don't become toxic in any way.

Save your money. Use them if you need them. Stock up again this time for the next cycle.

asked my neuro the same he said they would not hurt just lose potentcy. Give em a "shot"!

Well it was over 3 months ago when I 1st posted this question.....the shadows went away them....but it's back now and I've used the 5 injectors from 2000 that I had...wasted the 1st one, not sure how, it's been 5 years...the next 4 worked great, got 4 more yesterday, that will last (HA)....had 7 CH's so far today, nothing less than a 7...glad I sold my weapons a few years ago...Dr. wrote me a script for O2, they were supposed to deliver today....no sign of them and no call backs to my calls...not a very nice persons...I found O2 worked good in the past and with only 4 injectors....

Try the Imitrex tip on the button to left.

I get Imitrex vials and needles to split my shots.

I can get 3 shots per 6mg, but the bad ones ussually need more.

Hi Bob,

I have kept a stash since the last cycle and that was three years ago and they said use by end of 2002. Well, they still seem to be doing the job for me. I don't know if they run out of potency but so far they're doing their job for me at least.

I hope that they still do their job for you. Keep stashing cause they are expensive and if they do the trick for you that's all that matters!

I use the tip to the side as well. I can get 3 shots out fo a pre-filled shot. Harder to do when I am getting hit bad cause I cant control what I am doing as well. But if I take it soon enough then I am good. Talk to your doc about vials and look into the Kudzu or other treatments as they might help.

I'm 2\3 year episodic too. I hoard mine and have had no problems. I also use the immigran tip and get 3 goes per injector.

Expiration dates typically have tp do with a drugs half life. I would call the pharmacy. It can sometimes be replaced.

I store my (dwindling) stash in the fridge, the logic being heat accelerates its degradation. I asked my pharmacist if this would extend its shelf life. He wouldn't give me a straight answer, so asked him if it would be bad if I stored it in the fridge. He said no. So why not?

Note of caution: take your Imitrex out of the fridge and bring to room temperature before injecting. Brrr.
