Title: Topamax too
Post by EmpressJMB on Jan 15th, 2005, 10:37am
I saw a new neuro yesterday.  Best one yet!  Very knowlegable about CH.  I haven't had a CH since September so he suggested I go off the Verapamil.  I did go years without a cluster so why keep taking it if I may not need it?  Anyway he gave me a script for o2 and one for Topamax in case I need it.  The side effects he described were problems with thinking which may or may not go away, kidney stones and weight loss.  He also gave me 12! Imitrex samples.  (anyone need some?)  He also said to call him any time, day or night, if I need to.  I've never had that offer from a neuro before!  He seems to understand the urgency of the pain.   PFDAN to all! Janet

Good to hear you found a good doc. He's right about the stones & Topamax. I took it for 10 or 11 months and got kidney stones twice, the first requiring surgery. That kinna hurt a lil' !!

edited to add the following:
About 1 in 50 adults taking Topamax have developed kidney stones. They are more common in men and in those who have had them before. They also may be more likely to occur if Diamox (acetazolamide) or Zonegran (zonisamide) is also taken or if the ketogenic diet (a special diet sometimes used to control seizures in children) is followed. Topamax therefore should be used cautiously in people taking Diamox or Zonegran or using the ketogenic diet.
To help prevent kidney stones, drink plenty of water, juice, or other fluids (8 glasses every day for adults). Sharp pains in your side or lower back may signal the onset of a kidney stone. Consult a doctor immediately or go to the emergency room.
