Title: Imitrex Tip-UPDATED! Post by SeVen on Oct 16th, 2004, 2:11pm The Imitrex tip posted by DJ has been most helpful for those of us on a limited budget...getting 3 injections out of one 6mg vial. Here is an updated method I have devised that works easier for me.... -Go to a pharmacy and ask for an empty small glass bottle or vial, like the type that nitgoglycerin comes in, or get one at a head shop...one of those brown vials with a cap that is used to sell illegial drugs in...whichever way you can, get a vial with a screw-on cap! -Remove the plastic cap, and boil the vial in plain water for at least 15 minutes to sterilize it, removing it carefully and letting it dry out on its own. -Wipe the inside of the cap with alcohol and let it dry. -Swish some alcohol into the vial, dump it out, and let it dry. -Take your Imitrex injector vials out of the blue plastic holder. -Using a Q-tip or similar, inject the Sumatriptan into the new vial...I put 4 vials worth at a time in mine. -Cap the vial tightly...I store mine in the fridge. -To keep from tipping over the vial and spilling it's gold-like contents all over the place, find an old plastic medicine bottle cap...about 2" across should do fine. In the center of that cap, however you can, melt a round hole there, making it a tight fit for that vial of gold liquid....insert the vial into that hole and it will keep you from tipping over the vial!!! -You can now make up as many syringes of Sumatriptan as you like....I keep 3 in the fridge, and 1 at work in a dark drawer. -I use the smallest available, .5cc (50 units) with a 30 gauge needle, available at Walmart (about 13 cents each) or Walgreens (10-$3.50). -Mearly open the vial, dip the syringe down into the liquid, and draw up what you think you need. Then hold the syringe with the needle up, and draw the liquid back into the syringe until you see a small air bubble form...this removes the liquid from the needle, leaving it clean. Recap the syringe, and your ready for a quick hit when needed. -When a hit is needed, holding the needle up, press the plunger very, very easily, moving the air bubble back out, until you see a drop form at the needles opening, with one shake to toss off that drop. Now you are ready to inject with no trapped air. -The small gauge of 30 is vitrually unnoticeable when injecting...something that can't be said for the original injector vial needle There is sometimes a small burning sensation, but I believe that is due to either the alcohol, or the sumatriptan. -I have found that 10 to 12 units works for me...more may be needed, or less, depending on each individual. Also a little tip that I have seen used many times when blood is drawn..... When you wipe the injection area with alcohol, you sometimes cannot find that exact cleaned spot again, and have to redo it all over. Before you apply the alcohol, take your fingernail and press it into the chosen spot for about 5 seconds..press hard..this leaves a real nice crescent shaped red mark...your new target to wipe and inject to..bullseye!! Just keep in mind that sterility and cleanliness are upmost while doing the above. May your next 24 hours be free of the beast! |

Title: Re: Imitrex Tip-UPDATED! Post by SeVen on Oct 17th, 2004, 6:21am Care to share those ideas there mate? I have been unable to find the type of empty, new vial, such as what insulin is sold in..that would be the best to use. I reckon if I were to buy a coupla thousand of them from a manufacturer, I could find that..but it would be a $$$ thing then..... |

Title: Re: Imitrex Tip-UPDATED! Post by maxinebs on Oct 24th, 2004, 9:58pm Actually, I just got a prescription from my doc for VIALS of imitrex. Now I just need a prescription for the syringes and the doc will teach me to inject waht I need. Most likely 2-3 mg -- the vials are 6mg each. This way I can inject b/w 4-6 times a day. Good luck! Hope your nights and days are pain free! Maxine |
