What a kind offer April, making me feel somewhat sheepish to point out that O2 is not the right nomenclature for Oxygen. The Periodic table symbol for Oxygen is simply "O". Maybe clusterheads make the symbol show 2 parts Oxygen simply because we know we need high dosage rates (12 - 15 LPM) ? ::) |

might be true but check the net & type in O2... ya get Oxygen. Weird huh! |

You asked...! The periodic, chemical symbol for Oxygen is O. However, oxygen does not exist freely in the atmosphere due to a high bonding affinity. Oxygen will rapidly bind to other molecules with a similar affinity. And what element is most similar than oxygen itself! Hence, O2. Oxygen only exists as O2 at minimum...not just plain O. Further, there can be O3, which does really bad things to the ozone -- like eat holes through it! It all has to do with valence shell electrons. Not something I want to think about at this hour of the morning, yet!! Carrie :) |

Title: Re: 02 Masks Anybody want them? Post by IndianaJohn on Aug 12th, 2004, 10:25am Carrie is 100% correct. It is indeed to the way the valance bonds (electrons on the outer orbits) are arranged. Simple O combines readily with other molecules forming oxides, rust is a common form. O2 is much more stable in that it is bonding with itself. Though the potential for oxidation is still there. Thanks Carrie for the definition. |

Title: Re: 02 Masks Anybody want them? Post by floridian on Aug 12th, 2004, 10:36am Carrie is 99% correct. When we talk about oxygen gas, we are talking about O2, and vice-versa. But ... Quote:
No! O3 IS ozone. When it exists on the ground, ozone oxidizes anything biological (like trees or your lungs). Ozone is caustic in the same way hydrogen peroxide is. In the stratosphere, O3 is a good thing and filters out ultraviolet light. |

Title: Re: 02 Masks Anybody want them? Post by juvy on Aug 12th, 2004, 10:44am LOL this has gone so far off track. John, I'll ship out the masks this weekend. Cheers, April |

Title: Re: 02 Masks Anybody want them? Post by CarrieBethRN on Aug 12th, 2004, 11:59am LOL Thanks Floridian!! I knew something was "off" there! As I said it was early for me, and I hadn't really slept at all last night, yet again! Ooops hehehe Yeah so...we like that O3 too!! Go ozone! :D Sorry we hijacked your thread, juvy!! ;) Carrie :) |

Title: Re: 02 Masks Anybody want them? Post by don on Aug 12th, 2004, 12:27pm You may wish to make them available to OUCH UK. If I remember correctly they administer some type of loaner program. |
