Title: Verapamil side effect...
Post by athimmel on Aug 3rd, 2004, 12:14pm
I was taking Verapamil as a preventative, and it was working well.  However, I developed an embarassing side effect....

I developed severe constipation.  I tried laxatives, fiber therapy, softeners  :-[ ... there was very little relief.

Has anyone else had this happen?  If so...how did you treat it?  I would like to go back on the Verapamil, but am afraid of the side effect.

Yep, me too.  My wife is hispanic, so I get to have some really good hot sauce.  Clears ya right out the next day.

Either Citrucel once a day or a trip to McDonalds keeps me running smoothly.

I had a really rough time with it.
My supple buttocks were not big on it at all.
I stopped taking it... went with straight topamax.

I found that taking magnesium tabs had just the opposite effect. maybe combining the two brings things into balance  :)

Check with a doctor of course, but 250mg of Magnesium twice a day does seem to combat that side effect.  My one doc also had prescribed Kristallose at one point which is a rare one to be prescribed in this way, but can also help.

Good luck!
Carrie :)

Being chronic I take 640 mg of Verapamil dailey ( has kept the monster away for 6 months, can't taper off
cause they come right back at lower doses). I find Post Grapenuts does the trick.

                   Good Luck

I am right in the middle of this problem having started the Verapamil 5 days ago. And you are right, it is a severe case. Since I started a steroid taper at the same time as I started the Verapamil (remember it's side effect of making you want to eat more)...well...I am dancing a very thin line here. Here is what I am using and am just starting to experience some relief:
#1 - Control: as much as I feel like I want to eat everything in sight I am not...and eating mostly fruit. Today I had some fish. This evening however I ate an apple, a bannana, and some papaya, all in vanilla yoghurt.

2# Agiolax- It is a mixture of Senna and Psyllium (both are plants) and works as a natural laxative. Those two ingredients are what you may want to remember, likely available in a number of herbal offerings from the various makers of herbal remedies.

3# I am also taking Magnesium supplements (800mg) per day...but the problem still developed so my experience suggests that magnesium is not enough to counter the Verapamil plugup effect.

4# I am drinking as much water as I can tolerate. The verapamil makes me perspire...so I am assuming that its constipating action comes from some diuretic effect. I am trying to balance that with more intake then normal.

It is a bit too early to tell if all this has been effective but I would say that the added water is a no-brainer when taking Verapamil, and the other herbs are very safe. Some early indication of relief but I just started the regimen yesterday and herbs like this do not work as quickly as some of the harsher laxatives. I'll post more after a couple more days.

Another side effect I am getting from the Verapamil is slo

Total raisin bran every night before bed with an exlax...

I was so constipated I about died. And it just so happened that I started the verap a few days before my wedding in vegas. I looked like the fuckin michelin man at my wedding. Prime rib and king crab all weekend long... I didn't shit for over 5 days. :-[

VERY uncomfortable! I'd never been constipated before. It definitely sux...

Have a smoothie everyday for lunch, with bannana's in it. That will help too.

I handled Vera just fine by adding plenty of fiber to my diet.  I did not wait until I was constipated though...

Many people attempt to handle the problems of constipation too late.  Prevention is the key.  Just my opinion on dealing with Vera...

Lots of good replies here - and all true.  Fiber, water, fruits & veggies (prunes are especially helpful, and not bad tasting), and an ex-lax or 2 as needed.

It's a miserable side effect, but the fact is - I'd rather be full of shit, than deal with the beast.

If all the above fail, you can buy a little item called a "Fleet's Enema" at your local pharmacy.  Pleasant? ... No, but it works.

By the way ... my husband and I have a word for this annoying little syndrome .... VICUPS .... "Verapamil Induced Clogged Up Poop Shoot".
