Title: looking for feed back on melatonin Post by Axel on Jul 20th, 2004, 9:38am I see some people seem to have success with melatonin. Any info on what it is what it does and at what dosage, would be appreciated. I'm on verapamil ,imtrex nasal/inject ,and o2, i'm still getting shadows so am looking at more options. Any side effects? ...Wish everyone a PF day.......................Axel. |

Title: Re: looking for feed back on melatonin Post by thomas on Jul 20th, 2004, 10:03am anywhere from 3-12 mg an hour before bed works best for most. Side affects are drowsiness. lol. If you take too much you will have a "hangover" in the morning, just drink some hot coffee, that will cure it. |

Title: Re: looking for feed back on melatonin Post by Giovanni on Jul 20th, 2004, 10:07am Hi Axel, I had good results with 9mg 1 hours before bedtime. Throw in a couple B-Complex 50's during the day along with a multi vitamin. Good luck, John |

Title: Re: looking for feed back on melatonin Post by Bob_Johnson on Jul 20th, 2004, 10:28am It's safe, inexpensive and worth a try even though results are uneven in studies. All clinicial studies I've seen have used 9 mg at bedtime. You should know within a week or less whether it works for you. You may like to explore two sites for other options: www.headachedrugs.com WWW.MELDRUM.DEMON.CO.UK/migraine. At bottom of home page, look for FAQ on clusters: four sections of extensive material; strong on treatment options. |

Title: Re: looking for feed back on melatonin Post by Superpain on Jul 21st, 2004, 5:44pm Thing about it is, it's not regulated by the FDA or anything like that, so different companies make it in varying sizes or doses. The kind I take comes in 3mg pills. My effective dose in the peak of my cycle was 18mg. It gave me my first night of sleep in months. |

Title: Re: looking for feed back on melatonin Post by nutty2chat2003 on Jul 21st, 2004, 9:59pm Went and got some today. Gonna try tonight. Any idea how long it will take before I notice a difference? Will it be immediate or will I need to stick with it for a few weeks before I notice a change? |

You know, everybody have different reactions but it think that you should at least take it for a week and maybe more, every night. You will feel the drowsiness on the first night, but i feel that (hypothesis here for what it worths) maybe melatonin reset "things" over many days. Start with a low dose to see how you react to it (let's say 2-3 mg), some go to 9 mg. I take 3mg 45 min before bedtime and 1.5-3mg more at bed time ( to add another wave of melatonin in my system) Some people here have more experience than me with melatonin, hope they will answer you too. Maybe you could start a new topic with that question. Hope it helped blue |

Title: Re: looking for feed back on melatonin Post by Grandma_Sweet_Boy on Jul 22nd, 2004, 7:11pm I bought it at Shoppers Drug Mart - about $13.00 plus taxes. I also noticed it in the health food store where it was cheaper but that was after I already had some. Our local Walmart told me it wasn't available in Canada for sale - as I'm standing there showing the guy the bottle that I'd just purchased! Apparently he's not the sharpest tool in the shed! ;;D Good luck - it is available in Canada though - if you can't find it PM me with your mailing address. I'd be happy to go pick it up and courier it out to you. Carol |

Title: Re: looking for feed back on melatonin Post by nutty2chat2003 on Jul 22nd, 2004, 8:04pm No headaches last night!! Don't know if it was the melatonin or not. Took 9 mg an hour before bed. I was thinking about backing it down a little at a time to see if I really need that much. I just hope that it was the melatonin and not just a fluke. I've thought I had the perfect cure before and it turned out just a coincidence. |

Title: Re: looking for feed back on melatonin Post by IndianaJohn on Jul 27th, 2004, 6:08pm I just tried Melatonin two nights ago and had my first PF nights in quite a while ( WOO HOO - jumping up and down doing the happy dance!) It didn't prevent any HA's during waking hours, but hey, I'll take a full nights sleep anytime!!! |

Title: Re: looking for feed back on melatonin Post by thomas on Jul 27th, 2004, 6:14pm Awesome news folks, glad you are getting some pf sleep, it helps so much if you have to battle the beast during the day, if you've had some good "sack-time" the night before. |

Now try this, add 5-HTP 50mg X 2 during the day; B-Complex 50 mg X 3 per day and see what happens. Give it a couple of days. John |

Title: Re: looking for feed back on melatonin Post by IndianaJohn on Jul 27th, 2004, 9:02pm Okay, I'm a little slow today. Right after I posted from work, got a K6 for my drive home so I'm a little out of it right now. A quick question. What is 5-HTP? I tried looking it up, but I'm not thinking to well right now.. John |

Title: Re: looking for feed back on melatonin Post by IndianaJohn on Jul 27th, 2004, 9:05pm Like I said, I'm a little slow today. Just found the definition in the meds thread. Is this something that I can get at a health food store? |

Title: Re: looking for feed back on melatonin Post by Giovanni on Jul 28th, 2004, 5:02am Hi IJ, Yes, it's available at GNC and other vitamin stores. Bottle say you can have up to 300 mg per day, but I personally think that's too much when taking melatonin at night. Try finding the 50mg tablets and take them during the day for a total of 100 mg a day. A couple of B complex vitamins should help also. You'll probably needs a few cups of coffee during the daylight hours. 5-HTP tend to make you a bit sleepy. Give it a try. Good Luck, John |
