A fertility drug given to females who are trying to have a baby (or multiple babies). :o

Doctors at MHNI report 'more than 1' CH sufferer who have been using this drug "successfully" as a preventative.

I already tried it once for only a little over 3 weeks. It may have reduced the number of attacks that I was having. BUT...I ended up getting very sick, thought I had the flu. Couldn't quit coughing and vomiting. I also dehydrated. My PCP said that the illness I had was side effects from the Clomid and to stop it immediately. He even called MHNI to inform them that I was sick and was instructing me to stop the med.

Now, docs at MHNI are sceptical that it was the Clomid that made me sick and want me to try it again. I have an appointment on the 26th and will find out more.

Anyone else heard of Clomid for clusters ?????????

I have never heard of it being used for clusters though I am new here. But I did take it to have my children.. How many days do they have you taken it for? When trying to conceive you ONLY take it for 5 days. And yes it days make you feel crappy. And if correct one fo the side effects were headaches... I don't know though I would not take anything like that especially if they are not sure it caused you to get sick last time or not. If a drug made me sick you bet your butt I would not take it, thus the reason I tossed the Prednisone right into the toilet after just 2 doses..
Fortunately I am Painfree from my CPH/Clusters right now thanks to INDOMETHACIN.
I would seek a different drug then Clomid (Clomiphene). I never heard of a Fertility drug as a preventative! [smiley=huh.gif] Guess they will try anything. I guess it all is a personal choice and what the sufferer wants to try.. But for me, I would try other things before a fertility drug, and even the rate of success is not very definative. More then 1 were successful! Not enough proof for me.. Good Luck and Hope you find your Painfree days ahead..

Wow - you brought back memories. My oldest daugher is a Clomid baby. She's 32 now.

I was one of the first people to take this drug in Canada and the day I found I was pregnant, a news story broke about a woman in Australia who gave birth to 9 babies using the same drug. Remember, foks, this was before ultrasounds, so I had to sweat it out for a couple of months to find out I wasn't having a bloody litter.

Interesting to see it being used for CH.

Hey there Unsolved,

I've heard of men using Clomid for body building because it elevates luteinizng hormone which will increase testosterone and follicle stimulating hormone which does the same.

Both these hormones are produced in the pituatary gland....

Clomid occupies, but does not activate, estrogen receptors in the hypothalamus (and other areas). It also occupies AND activates other areas, which may be why clomid users often experience estrogen mediated mood swings.
If this does prove useful, it would be interesting to look at the effect of aromatase inhibitors on CH in men.
Men produce testosterone, some of which is converted to estrogen when aromatase enzymes attach to the testosterone molecule. Aromatase inhibitors attach to the aromatase enzyme and prevent the enzyme from attaching to the testosterone molecule.
The effect is reduced estrogen and increased testosterone.

Unsolved--

I've never heard of anyone using Clomid. I'm really sorry to hear that it made you so sick but it's great that it may have reduced the number of attacks you were having. It's an unconventional medication to be used as a preventative but you may be the pioneer in discovering a brand new drug to help other clusterheads. I wish you well and it sounds like you have a fantastic team of doctors who really know what they're doing and care for you very much.

P.S. I was wondering today if your CH's returned after you came home from the convention? Are you still pain free or have they returned? What a wonderful gift you were given that convention weekend.

Clomid was discussed here about a year or so ago when a sufferer found that it stopped his ha.s but unfortunately, CH.com's Search is not working for me today, so I am unable to link you.
From memory (and we did get excited about this at first) clomid appeared to stop the ha.s but after a fortnight, they reurned. This also happened to others who tried clomid. Initial success, followed by resumption of attacks, seemed to be the way it went.
We did ask Mopar's GP about it but the drug is very expensive here and also hard to acquire. He was reluctant to use it until there were more promising results.
