Title: Chiropractic/ Accupuncture?????
Post by adacie on Jul 14th, 2004, 9:50pm
I am new to these boards, so please don't jump all over me!! :)

I am 21 years old and have had clusters for about four years. I am going through my worst cycle so far, lasting about 4 months and still going strong. I usually only get clusters 2-3 times a night and every once in a while, I will have one late at night before bed.

I am trying not to take all the meds. I tried the Prednisone and didn't like the side effects. So, I went to a chiropractor (sp) yesterday. Since then, I have had about 8-10 BAD clusters (9 on the kip scale) during the day and about 5 during the night.  This has only been for about two days.

I am wondering if anyone else has tried this and if I should keep going. Will it start to get better??? I know everyone is different, but any feedback, whether it worked or not, would be greatly appreciated.

Your fellow sufferer,
Stacey

Neither the Chiro nor the acupuncturist is going to help your CH. Dont waste your time or money.

Find a good neuro and stick with him.

Its possible that a subset of us have cervicogenic aggravation or triggering - which means that chiropractic might improve (or make worse) headaches.  But clusterheadaches involve the hypothalamus - which is inside the brain.  Chiropractic is not going to directly affect that.

I go to a chiro when my neck gets out of alignment - and it is usually worse in cycle.  It helps me with neck problems, but I haven't seen any effect on my headaches.

Before chiropractic service: clusters 2-3 times a night and an occasional one before bed.

After chiropractic service: 8-10 BAD clusters during the day and 5 at night.

See where this is going? If you hit your thumb with a hammer it would hurt. If you hit it again it will hurt more. It will not feel better if you continue hitting it.

Please stop what you’re doing. Find a neurologist that is up to date on cluster headaches.

Thanks for your advice everyone. I have made an appointment with the Diamond Headache Clinic in Chicago, so hopefully I will get some help there.

Just wondering if there is ANYTHING that has worked other than drugs. I have other health issues that can be impacted with the drugs, and I just don't like it.

Thanks again!

Have your check book, visa card and any change in your pocket ready for them but expect no results.

Bet they try to sell you their magic headache syrup.

A good chiropractor is worth their weight in gold. But they have never helped my cluster cycle. You wouldn't call an electrician for a plumbing problem, would you? Get thee to a neurologist.

I'm new here, too, so don't worry.
I, like many others here I'm sure, have run the gamut of various professionals looking for solutions to my cluster headache problems. Among these professionals(?) are chiropractors. While I am sure that chiropractic medicine may help someone with their cluster headaches, I have yet to meet such a person.
While chiropractors have their place in many types of headache relief, I believe they have little place in *cluster*headache relief; more often they help tension headaches which have been mis-diagnosed as migraines. (and we both know a cluster headache is a far far cry from either.)
Worse, chiropractors tend to understandably think only within the confines of their own medicine. Also, few have a good understanding of cluster headaches.
It was definitely worth a shot, but as it seemed only to have exascerbated the problem, I must agree with everyone else here and recommend you stop hitting yourself with the hammer and "get thee to a neurologist." (though I'm sure you already have)

                                                   best of luck,
                                                          Ted
