Title: Upshot on Candida?
Post by pamstroud on Jul 4th, 2004, 11:33am
This cycle I did a lot of reading of older messages here on Candida as a cause of/contributor to CHs. Seems like quite a few people aborted cycles by treating for Candida.

I happened to be on the Mexican border on vacation so I bought a diflucan pill in Mexico (over the counter) and took it when the cycle was at the end and I was having nasty all-day shadows. They went away, but came back in a few days (at which point I took clusterbuster recommended treatment).

One poster pointed out that some of the people who treated for Candida successfully were no longer posting, which might mean that they had found a "cure". I am wondering if mushrooms might be some sort of Candida inhibitor/supplanter.

Any thoughts on the Candida line of thought?

Pam

There are a lot of people in Candida that get CH.

They also play half way decent hockey.

That's silly.

Just ask Tampa Bay-ians.

Candida could be an aggravator for some - we know the immune system is involved in clusters. We know that infections of various types can wreck havoc with immune hormones (cytokines, interleukins). Some of these interleukins are elevated in cluster headaches, and they can cause inflammation, increased nitric oxide, etc.  I don't think that candida is The Cause of clusters.  But if someone has a Candida infection (which can be a chronic and 'silent'), it could  make things worse.

As far as mushrooms being a candida inhibitor - could be.  Mushrooms have a variety of immune boosting compounds, and they might trigger an increased response to Candida (which is a yeast fungus). I don't think that is the main activity of clusterbusters though.

Thanks for your info. I don't know if any food could boost immunity that much in such small doses. I am at a real disadvantage trying to understand these things since I know nothing about biology. (I know something about the brain since I have a bunch of bipolar immediately family members, and I've had to learn everything I could about how that works like I'm trying to do about CH.)

You know, sometimes during an episode I feel like my body is the "host", and I am vying with some unseen organism (Satan?) for control. Sometimes I feel like the unseen organism has appetites suspiciously like a yeast organism ( blue-brie cheese, mushroom brie, lots of ice cream sandwiches). And then there is that maddening gnawing of the shadow, like I am being fed upon by millions of tiny bodysnatchers.

Before the end of every episode I am half insane and come up with all kinds of crackpot theories (one 15 years ago being Candida, so I was surprised to see it here). But  where are those people who treated for Candida now?

Pam

I am speculating as I don't know what anti-fungal ingredients are in the mushrooms (if any).  In terms of traditional anti-biotic substances, it is definitely too little in a single dose to have an effect.  If there is anything, I would guess it is like an immune priming.  Vaccines or immunizations involve very small doses of protein, but enough for the immune system to 'learn' what to attack, or not to attack.  When someone has a food allergy, a single bite (or a whiff of latex or peanut dust) can cause a very large immune activation.  It could be that some mushroom proteins are similar enough to Candida to trigger a reaction and reduce the infection.   Again, just speculation.    I don't know alot about candida, and if I thought I had it, I would go with a treatment that was more established.

OK, this is the first I've read about candida, which is quite a coincidence since I just finished treating a really nasty thrush.  I'm pain-free for four days now and I've been tapering off my topamax.

Of course, I can't assign cause and effect here, but it's kinda eerie that in six years of poring over this board I haven't seen that before....

Keep yer fingers crossed for me!

Pain Free Days, Y'all!!!

Check out the archives -- there's quite a bit about it.

Tony Orlando was a very wise man.

Oh, my Candida
We could make it together
The further from here, girl, the better
Where the air is fresh and clean

Candida
Just take my hand and I'll lead ya
I promise life will be sweeter
'Cause it said so in my dreams

The future looks bright, the gypsy told me so last night
Said she saw our children playing in the sunshine
And there were you and I ... in a house, Baby, no lie
And all these things were yours, and they were mine

And now this stupid song is stuck in my brain.
