Title: Neuro Prescribed Seroquel
Post by EyeHurtOhio on May 28th, 2004, 3:27pm
Havn't seen this drug mentioned on here, i even did a search. But saw my Neuro on Wed. and he wants me to take 50mg of Seroquel before i go to bed along with Melatonin. He claims Cleveland Clinic has been using it with good results. I havn't taken this med yet but will try it tonight.

I assume that you found when you did your search that seroquel is an antipsychotic medication used for the treatment of acute and chronic psychosis including schizophrenia.

This would probably be why you haven't seen any mention of it on here. Most messages here talk about the standard and tried CH treatments. There are occasional posts where people have been prescribed antipsychotics but I certainly have no memory of great success being reported.

Personally I would be asking your neuro to talk you through why he thinks this is a good thing to try. Have you already tried the usual CH treatments without success?

Zyprexa is another med in the family which has gained some attention in the last year or so. Several of us have reported excellent results using it to abort an attack, others have reported no luck.

As with many meds, there is a period of trying them out to see if the theory behind their use for CH plays out or not.  However, if your doc knows that it has been used by a reputable outfit (Cleveland) I'd not worry about giving it a try. Given the nature of this med, you will know within a couple of doses whether it's helpful for you.

EyeHurt,

After my ex BF mentioned Seroquel to me, (claiming that one round of will "cure" CH )I spoke to my specialist about it.  She said it has been useful for aborting a (here goes the M word) resistant migraine, but has not been showen to abort a CH attack nor prevent them.  It may give you a reprieve at night, depending how your particular chemistry reacts to it, as it may knock you out cold for the night. ( Neurontin is suppsed to do that as well, but didn't effect me at all) If your attacks are only at night it's worth a try.  But I guess my opinion is not to hold your breath...if anything the melatonin will be what is the effective of two.  But if it works out for you please let us know...

edit for wording.

My Nuero had me try it! I started at 25mgs and if that didnt help I was to bump it up to 50 mgs a night. I must admit that I did get a couple of nights of sleep while taking it, but it was rather inconsistent and left me feeling really tired in the mornings.

Thankyou for the reply's

Well i took the 50mg of Seroquel last night along with Melatonin and Oxycodone, i'm also on my second course of Prednisone taper. Tryed to sleep at 9:30 but it was probably around 10:30 that i actually slept. Woke up at 11:30 with a CH that reached about a 7 on the kip scale, took a Imitrex 100mg pill. Felt kind of drunk and dizzy from the meds. CH lasted about 40 minutes then i went back to sleep.

This has been a rough cycle for me (and family), havn't had a pain free day in about 2 months. I keep hoping it will be over soon, but fear since the Prednisone isn't working i have a long road ahead.

I told the Neuro that i read on here narcotic type pain killers are not effective for CH but he said to take it at bedtime anyways. So far no rebound headaches.

Thanks Again,
Tom
