Title: Anyone tried Axert?
Post by Slacker on Apr 10th, 2004, 12:20am
Anyone tried Axert.  My doctor told me they have a longer half life than Imitrex, and that one 12.5 mg per day may make the attacks go away.  Gotta do something, and I am not sure that Pregnisone works for me.

From thier own website:

AXERT is a prescription medication indicated for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults. AXERT is not intended for the prophylactic therapy of migraine or for use in the management of hemiplegic or basilar migraine. Safety and effectiveness of AXERT have not been established for cluster headache, which is present in an older, predominantly male population. AXERT should only be used when you have been diagnosed with migraine.

No triptans should be used for preventative reasons, this very well could work as an abortive albiet slowly.

Lee,
My doc did put me on Amerge for a short time as a preventive.  He wanted me to take it for 9 days, but my insurance would only give enough for 4 days.  I would wake up every day with the headaches back and strong, but I would take one tab at 6pm, and one at 10pm.  After the 10pm tab, I started to get some relief that prevented CH's for the rest of the night.

Apparently, Amerge and Frova can be used short term to prevent.  But in general, daily use of triptans DOES have the ability to cause rebound (though this is widely debated).

Unlabeled use of drugs is not uncommon for folks in our situation, hope it works for you.

I have heard of amerge and frova being used as a preventative because they are suppose to be effective a long time  but not axert.  I have taken axert for cluster headaches.  It aborts them just fine like imitrix.  But 2 hours latter I am getting  hit again weather I take imitirix or axert.

Didn't work very well for me.

Axert didn't do crap for me either.  It takes too long to be effective is probably the worst drawback, and you have to wait two hours before you can take a second...for the day...and the attack is usually over by then.
