Notice that all carbonated beverages taste like ass when on the Topa? Straight... mixed... they all blow. Even beer is not right, in my opinion. Then I stumbled across this...

'Sodas and other carbonated beverages will utterly taste like ass, so you may as well give them up now if you're considering Topamax.'

I'm taking 225 mg daily topa and find that all food tastes like ass right about now. I'm certain that this has quite a lot to do with the weight loss every one experiences. Is the topa working for you? Connie

I believe so. PF for 5 days, but am also at the time my episode typically ends, so who knows.

I was taking 100 mg a day...it took about a week for my taste to come back! :)

Uh, well not really sure if I wanna know what ASS tastes like but I am thinking of trying Topo. I've tried everything else...have had a scrip waiting for me at the drug store for 2 months but have been too afraid of the side effects to get the damn thing filled. Now, I think it may be my next step. >:(

Side effects up front were a bit annoying... weakness... general lethargy... out of it. Got used to them in about two weeks. Now the main side effect is the 'hey... this tastes like... mmm... ass' thingy.

Interesting site, glad to see it.

I have heard a LOT of people say that soda tastes strange while taking Topamax. I usually have a diet cola with lunch and/or dinner, and I really haven't noticed much taste difference.

I am have massive tingling.

But as I have said. Massive tingling in the fingers vs. massive unilateral eye-stabbing death pain on the left side of my head.....hmmm. I'll take the tingling.

Well I start the Topomax tonight. I tgab at bed time daily (25mg) for a week then 2 at bedtime. Tiny things aint they? I'll let ya know about the "ass" thing. I'm addicted to my diet pepsi only soda I care to drink. So if I can't drink it...I'll keep ya all "posted". lol

Am I to assume that there has been an exhaustive study conducted on this subject? ;;D ;;D ;;D

My neuro had me start at 50 mg. In most cases, docs will have you starts at 25 mg, and add 25 mg each week. I believe with CHs, you are to make an assessment at 100 mgs. If it is stopping the cycle. Remain at that dosage. If not continue to increase dosage until 200 mg. If no relief comes at this dosage, then I have read that it is not going to work, and you should begin to taper off of it.

I was quite aggressive in my tapering up of the medication. It did cost me some s/e's.

As I said, I started at 50 mg, but increased 25 mg, every 3 days. I have remained at 150 mg (divided into 75 mg, twice daily).

I say, if you haven't tried Topamax as a preventative to give it a go. There are some serious side effects (not the tingling). There can be development of kidney stones, glaucoma, and all the cognitive disruption (hence Dopeymax).

I am lucky, the tingling is lessening.

The headaches honestly began to disappear with only 75 mg dose. I see my neuro in a few weeks, so we' can hopefully discuss reduction in dosage.

Thorns, as far as diet soda tasting like ass.....it sort of does. I am used to it. I gave up drinking regular cola 3 years ago and dropped 5-10 lbs. I am weight-consciencious.

God! I didn't quite make it to the bathroom after reading your post - I was laughing so hard. You know us bangers in full episodes don't get too many laughs. Thanks.

My neurologist is starting me on TOPO 25mg tonight and never said a word about seizures, tingling, memory loss or possible retinal bleeding. What we will not do for releif.

So now I can look forward to asscola. Great!

It seems that people know pretty quickly if they can tolerate Topa...

Interesting site...and an intersting discussion of Topmax.

One thing I think has to be considered....maybe someone can find more recent research. But I was told by my neuro, and had read somewhere, that for headache prevention it seemed that anything over 100 or 200 mg a day (can't remeber which) seemed to show little benefit. Seems from that discussion that 200 mg is sort of the trnsition dosage from taking small amounts to taking a lot. Maybe the persistence of the stupidity side effect is related to taking doses over 200 mg?

I stopped taking 100 mg a day about 3 weeks ago, and I seem to feel more "myself", and my mental sharpness seems to be improving...after reading that the stupidity sometimes goes away slowly...have to feel lucky! :)

Well, I started on 25 mg last Tuesday and almost immediately my Diet Vanilla Coke (yummy) started tasting like Diet Vanilla Ass (yucky) >:(. I'm gettin the tingly fingertips too.
Today I ate 1 cheeto and it didn't taste right. Right now, the inside of my mouth tastes like the glue from an envelope. Great!

Tomorrow I will up to 50 mg. No difference in my h/a's yet.

It took the 50 mg a day to get me PF and that took a few days... it may take more for you...

yes 2 nights PF and counting...My Dt. Pepsi tastes awful for a bout 1/3 of the can then I'm used to it. The tingling goes away after a few days too. I would get mostly in my heels...foods don't tase quite right, no...but I don't have much appitite most of the time either. On occasion I get real hungry and I HAVE to eat. Tonight I could care less..but I've got in some fish filets.

I would aslo have a few days of the dopy feeling CRS and simple words just weren't there, but that faded too as my body adjusted to the increase, Now if that doesn't happen.. or gets worse..time to call the doc.

Diet ginger ale is not too shabby (learned that last evening at a party). Cola and the like remains nasty.

On 125mg a day... Dr wants me to maintain that dosage for 6wks after the last HA.

One thing I read was that once you reach your "optimum" doe the SE's will diminish greatly...they will be more prevalent at SMALLER doses if you need more.

Not so sure I buy that. But I did get used to the idiocy after a while at 100 mg. Might have taken a week or so.

For the tingling take a potassium supplement. I took 90 mg of K a day and it stopped the tingling.

I have found that I have to keep sucking on hard candies so that I won't taste the nasty taste in my mouth.

I think this is how George Castanza's fiance felt in the wedding invitation episode? Any Seinfeld fans out there?
