I've been getting unusual injection swelling around my imitrex injection sites lately. We've been doing these for 3 months and now I've suddently started to get reactions every time - looks like a nasty mosquito bite. [smiley=huh.gif]

Just wonder if anyone else has had this reaction? Almost like a localized allergic reaction. Or maybe we just have gotten really bad at giving shots all of a sudden? (My wife usually gives my my injections, but I've done it myself as well - same). I put ice on it to reduce the swelling.

No other negative effects. Headache goes away in 15 min or so as usual.

Hi,

I had the same problem after using imitrex. the first few times I had no problem then I would get a small reaction then it got so bad that it swelled to the size of a soft ball, and I had trouble breathing and had to use an inhaler. Just watch your breathing after using it. If you have any problems get your self to the ER.

I have not had the effects you describe...yet. I have had some soreness due to hitting muscle instead of just skin, however Glaxo says....

"Skin: Exacerbation of sunburn, hypersensitivity actions (allergic vasculitis, erythema, pruritus, rash, shortness of breath, urticaria; in addition, severe anaphylaxis/anaphylactoid reactions have been reported [see WARNINGS]), photosensitivity. Following subcutaneous administration of sumatriptan, pain, redness, stinging, induration, swelling, contusion, subcutaneous bleeding, and, on rare occasions, lipoatrophy (depression in the skin) or lipohypertrophy (enlargement or thickening of tissue) have been reported."

I never get any swelling but occasionally got a bit sore or slight bleeding after the autoinjector. Try and find a very fleshy place to jab. I use the outside of my upper thigh nearest to the butt. Try switching sides between jabs. Since I switched to the imitrex tip during my last episode it has actually been much less painful. I just pinch up a good layer of flesh and pull it away from my leg and then slowly push the needle in and it is quite painless.
