Title: Re: zomig Post by Edski_1 on Mar 5th, 2004, 5:27pm there are a lot of us who use Zomig as a primary abotive with no problems. It's a triptan (zolmitriptan), usually given in 5 or 10 mg oral tabs, but also in a nasal spray... Works well for me, the nasal spray tends to knock me on my butt a little, but gets rid of my headaches with a pretty good efficacy. Fortunately I've not needed it for a couple of months since I've started using topamax as a preventitive :) |

Title: Re: zomig Post by thomas on Mar 6th, 2004, 12:15pm mmmmmmmmmm I love Zomig. I works well for me, no re-bounds. It is my preventive of choice, I would warn you to not mix zomig and imitrex though. |

Title: Re: zomig Post by Edski_1 on Mar 6th, 2004, 2:47pm Yes, Thomas makes a VERY good point: DON'T MIX TRIPTANS!!!! There's a very impartant thread on the general posts board that's worth finding discussing the potential ramifications of mixing triptans... |

Title: Re: zomig Post by pinksharkmark on Mar 9th, 2004, 1:16am Before I started using psilocybin to abort my cycles, I found the Zomig tablets preferable to the Imitrex tablets in three ways: 1) They kick in a little faster 2) They last a little longer 3) They cost a little bit less I must point out that for me at least, the differences are not enormous, but they are definitely noticeable. At the time I last used Zomig, there was no nasal spray available. I did however find that for some bizarre reason the Imitrex nasal spray was almost useless for me. It barely cut the pain, and wore off in less than an hour. I have no idea why that might be since both the tablets and the injectable Imitrex always worked just fine for me. And yes, I followed the directions for using the nasal spray to the letter. Just one of those odd cluster anomalies, I guess. pinky |

Title: Re: zomig Post by Roxy on Mar 9th, 2004, 11:14am I agree, pinky. The nasal imitrex never worked too well for me, but the shots did. Still can't understand why they would react differently. Never have tried the pills. The new zomig nasals are supposed to work as fast as the imitrex shots, and least that's what the doctors say. I don't know, they won't let me try it right now.... :-/. |

Title: Re: zomig Post by SommelierCH on Mar 10th, 2004, 12:43pm Zomig ZMT 5mg and Maxalt MLT 10mg are the only two meds that I have used. Both are quick dissolving triptan tabs that enter the body under tongue, fast, bypassing the digestive system. Because of this absorption in the mouth, you need a lot less of the drug than you would if you swallowed a regular tab, that dissolves and is absorbed in your stomach or intestine. Did I mention they are fast? They have always been able to kill a Kip-10 in less than 15 min., sometimes within 7 min. I will say, that since my Kip-10’s are almost always out of a deep sleep, I have my O2 close by in the living room and start sucking on it as soon as I can blindly stumble to my tank. This combo is my lifesaver. I dosed with shrooms last night, so we'll see. I forgot I like shrooms. Win-Win. David J. |

Title: Re: zomig Post by burnt on Mar 10th, 2004, 9:48pm Pinky. Your experience with Imitrex nasal spray is not an anomaly at all. Here's my story: I live on the east coast of the US and flew to Hawaii. Not smart. The devil booked the seat behind me on the plane and waited quietly for my carcadian clock to get thrown off. When my brain was sufficiently out of sink with the earth the devil started to party. I'm back from Hawaii and still knee deep in my cluster. It's not fun having an attack when you're 5000 miles from home. Resort doctor was great and very helpful. He listened to my history and trused my experience and working with me he prescribed Imitrex StatDose (inj.) which is the only rescue that I find to be complete and reliable. Despite the Dr. being great, the local pharmacies were not. StatDose was in short supply so the Doc and the pharmacists gave me every form of Imitrex. I'm not one to take anything without reading up on the science first. The package insert for the Imitrex nasal spray explains your experience. The "bioavailability" (the amount that gets into your blood vs. the amount you put into your body) for nasal spray is very low for all uses and extremely low for men. The average person who injects 6mg. of StatDose will develop a blood concentration of 71ng/mL in 5 - 10 min. The average person who takes 25mg. of Imitrex Oral will develop 18ng/mL in about a half hour. The average FEMALE who inhales 5mg of Imitrex Nasal will develop 5ng/mL. THE AVERAGE MALE DEVELOPS ONLY 17% OF THAT WHICH IS LESS THAN 1mg/mL. The numbers say it all. 71 vs. less than 1. That's why it doesn't work for most men. In fact, the package insert clearly states that the Nasal version is not indicated for arresting clusters. If your Doc thinks Imitrex nasal spray is a solution kindly prod him/her to read up on the pharmacology. |
