Title: Pot and clusters
Post by violet on Feb 12th, 2004, 3:04pm
A friend of mine smokes pot to help his clusters.  Smoking pot always starts a cluster for me, even breathing in 2nd hand smoke...it's like instant pain!
Anyone here relate?

Ditto! Didn't find this out until I found this site and became educated on 'what i suffer from'...docs insisted meegraines for 18 yrs.

Experimented by eliminating/trying certain items and found toking to be a big no no when in cycle.

Phew,
it's a big no no during your cycles unless your chronic and it's a big no no anytime.

I'm not sure where you heard this....I myself am chronic and I don't know of any chronics (or any episodics for that matter) who have gotten relief from Clusters by smoking pot.  I tried several times, it never relieved my h/a's and in some cases GAVE me a headache.

I HAVE heard of several people with MIGRAINES getting relief from smoking pot.

Sometimes it seems to give me a HA, sometimes not.  There would seems to be a slight correlation, or rather negative correlation, to the quality of the product...the worse the quality, the more likel it will give me pain.

But then again, I've never been convinced that having a beer was a sure fire trigger for me either...sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.  Since a lot of my HA are day-timers, I really can't say that either pot or alcohol are doing their triggering for a 7:30 AM K8 as I was driving to work (when I had a job)...

Hey Ginny,  I think if you reread it you will see that they are saying that it is a big no no anytime if you are chronic....not saying that it's ok for chronics!  As opposed to just not being ok when you're in cycle for an episodic.  That's what I got out of it anyways.

Lizzie :)

Maybe all headache patients should be forced to smoke marijuana as part of the diagnostic process!

I don't smoke pot anymore, but when I used to durring a cycle, no matter what time of day it was, about an hour later I got slammed.  I wouldn't reccomend it.

Pot is a no no when you have clusters-Constricts the blood vessels and thats not good. Just like the demon alchohol-same result. Oh watch out for Malt-o-meal-Thats a killer!!

5 years chronic and may smoke away at will---seems to have no effect either positive or negatively. Though I do pay for this pleasure as I'm unable to watch television! 30-45 minutes is a definite trigger, every time. Gotta break up dvd movies into something like 12 parts.

Fabulous condition we have.

Oh, and Randal--during a cluster bout we want to constrict the blood vessels. Coffee, with its vasoconstrictive properties, is my best friend.

I was gonna post something along these lines, but I wanted to find out if pot really was a vasoconstrictor or not first!  Nicotine, DHE, many triptans, oxygen, sansert, all the ergot drugs are all vasoconstrictors...

Imitrex is a vasco-constrictor as well but that is what I used when I was in pain. worked like a charm.

I smoke quite a bit, it's 50/50 for me, it either helps or makes it worse.

i tend to leave my pot alone and beer during clusters, however this time, I wanted to see if made a diffrence using v/s not using....whether I smoked or not, my heeadches came like clockwork and I did my imitrex snort, and I had just finished a 7 day trial of FROVA,
didnt make them worse because i interveened immediately at onset so it never got much above a 6 on kip scale this time..(yippy)
my VOTE: 50/50 doubt it helps, but doesnt seem to alter their duration or intensity for me
