I am enjoying this site very much. I have seen alot of talk of different medications. I have been on Verpamil, but only 120mgs a day. From what I have been seeing I will need to increase this dose. My question is.. I get my headaches this time every year, Do I stay on thsi year round or just before the bout? Second I also get precribed to me Zoloft. Anyone have any info on that? Thank you all for understanding!

Hello Mediccpc,

120 Verapamil is very low. Normally I'm on 240 year round and will increase it during a cycle to at least 360. Zoloft might not be a bad idea as it fiddles with the serotonin thingy. It was recommended by one doctor I know. Good luck to you.

Suggest you explore: www.headachedrugs.com, an excellent site run by a headache doc.

Explore meds/dosing there; good current information.

Your dose of Verap is on the low side; it may have to be doubled to become effective.

The SSRI you are using has not been found every effective with cluster. As a class, the triptans are the most effective, with Imitrex injection being the best for most.

I was interested in whether antidepressants would be helpful for my husband who now has chronic CH. After scanning the info on this site for the past year or so it sounds like they have been helpful for some with CH, but made others worse. Another problem is that they can be hard to get off of if you decide they aren't for you. Best of luck. Artie

I take 150 mg of Doxepin at night. Doxepin is a "dinosaur" drug because its one of the older anti depresssants. Most of the new one coming out are SSRI's (Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, etc.) but Doxepin is a tricyclic anti depressant. It helps me to sleep and it also helps my depression and anxiety. There have been MANY others I tried, but this one is by far the best. I've been on it for several years now. It does not interfere with my CH. Most people don't have a problem getting off of anti-depressants but if you do want to get off of them then you need to do it slowly and under doctor supervision.
