Hi...pretty new to posting here!
I just have a general question. Has anyone ever tried indomethacin wayyyyyyyyyyy back a long time ago? I know it's not a drug CHers take regularly, but I know some people go through it as a trial. I was wondering if it is the kind of drug that usually works right away or if it takes awhile to build up in your system. I've read conflicting things about that!
When I tried it, it was for about 12 hours or so, and I didn't notice a change (headache was already REALLY good too!), but I'm kinda interested in giving it another shot, and I want to know if I should give it more than a 24 hour chance. ;)
Of course, will have to go through the neuro to see about trying it out, but I wanted to get "popular opinion" first!

It took 3 days for it to kick in and start working for me. It only worked for 5 months before the beast figured out what was up and I had to change meds again. :'(

Hey Liz...

Sorry to report failure...but in my case indomethecin did nothing. We tried it years ago when I was chronic (thank God I'm now "only" episodic!!). I don't recall the dosage, but we did stay on it for at least a couple of weeks. I was going to a HA specialist too, so I suspect we had the dosage high enough that it would have workewd if possible for me.

hey lizz,

i started up on indo about a month ago...it took like 3-4 days but my headaches did something weird...i started getting them much more frequently but they only worked their way up to about a kip-3 and then theyd fade away...2 weeks ago i started taking verapamil and depakote...i also take atenolol ( a beta-blocker) for my heart arrhythmia...somehow this concoction has been working well so far, i get 1-2 ha's a day and they just come real quick and at peak their a k-3 then they fade...its nice. id stay on the indo for a while to see what it does, give it a chance. laterzzz

As far as i know "Indomethacine"does nothing for us clusterheads,BUT its a miracle-medizine for those that suffer from CPH

Indometazine is in many cases used to separate cluster from CPH when they are trying to diagnose you here

Hi Lizz,
Yes, I believe you need to give it more than a 24 hour chance. I've taken it in the past, and my neuro just re-prescribed it for me in case the jolts on my CH side start getting out of control (ISH possibly???). He sez it's to be taken like a preventative medication... meaning that you have to give it a chance.

r.e. the comments above, my reading of the literature and board entries is the same.
Indomethacin is often used as almost a diagnostic tool as it is prescribed to rule out CPH and is very effective for this. Some CH sufferers have reported success with it, but for the most part other drugs more commonly work better.

Paroxysmal hemicrania is a syndrome similar to CH except that it prevails in females and attacks are briefer and more frequent. It is absolutely responsive to adequate doses of indomethacin, which underlines the importance of not misdiagnosing it as CH.

For me, it will probably most likely be a rule out for CPH symptoms coexisting with my new daily persistent headache which I have had now for 3 years. Over the past couple of months or so, I started getting very extremely painful stabbing headaches around the orbital of my right eye. My headaches are always on the right side, so this is no surprise. The stabbing headaches come on without warning, and they usually do not last a very long time...maybe 10-20 minutes or so. I can get upwards of 20 a day at times, but sometimes as few as maybe 3 or 4 a day. I get them at any time during the day, but they also wake me up from sleep at night. Overall, they make me want to pull my eye out!! (A little graphic, I know...) So that's why I'm considering the indomethacin. I think it's worth a decent trial! Thanks again for the info!

I took indo for about three weeks, twice or three times daily (I don't recall the freq). I was still popping it and the CH's kept occuring. I was warned of indo's side effects (intestinal) and sure enough got them too. So with indo I had the CH pain plus GI pain. Gave up on that one.
