Title: CH Research Post by BillK on Sep 25th, 2003, 8:33pm My wife just received a new nursing magazine that has an article describing CH and some info on research being done. The magazine is Advance for Nurses, September 15, 2003 Vol. 1 No. 1. The article was written by Bette Mooney and is on page 31. A most interesting part of the article was a report from a group of neurosurgeons who believe they have isolated the hypothalamas as the generator for chronic cluster headache. Ten patients were treated by implanting electrodes into the hypothalamus and applying a high-frequency electrical signal to the electrodes. Over an average of 4 weeks, the attacks decreased until all symptoms disappeared. When the electrical signal was removed, the attacks returned. Reapplying the signal made the attacks disappear. This information was presented to the 71st Annual Meeting of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) in San Diego on April 28, 2003. The text of the press release can be found at http://www.neurosurgery.org/aans/media/detail.asp?PressID=209 Included in this report is a link to an abstract of the presentation (pdf file). |
