Title: Hey Floridian....I have a question
Post by godsjoy on Sep 15th, 2003, 6:08pm
I'm asking Floridian because he seems to really know his stuff....but would listen to anyone who might have an idea....

I just went to have all my blood work done....I have a thyroid condition and I hadn't had my thyroid checked in a year and a half and I was thinking since I've so easily gained 15 lbs during this last cycle (pain free for 3 days)and I thought it might be low.....Didn't I hear somewhere on this board that Verapamil retards the effectiveness of thyroid medicine?

Anyway....Everything seemed fine except my liver function didn't look good....The Dr took me off Zocor thinking that might be the cause (although I haven't really been taking that too consistantly over this last year)....My question is......Would Maxalt or Verapamil cause my liver function to be bad? Or....could my Dr be right about the Zocor?

Just wondering.....also would like to know about the Verapamil and the synthroid....Was I dreaming?

Blessings,
Karen

Here's a quick take on the liver question after doing a little research:

Zocor can elevate liver enzymes, and going off of it usually results in a quick return to normal (if that is the cause).

Verapamil can cause an elevation in liver enzymes. Again this usually returns to normal when the drug is discontinued.

The manufacturer's literature did not indicate that Maxalt caused an increase in liver enzymes.  It did raise a yellow flag in people with moderate to severe liver disease, probably because that group would have difficulty in handling the drug.

If you are taking two drugs that both can elevate enzymes, then there is a possibility that there is some interaction between them.

Your doctor's advice to stop the zocor sounds reasonable.  If the elevation is not severe and I was in your place, I would drop one med, retest the enzyme levels after a bit, and take it from there.

I will check on the verapamil/thyroid for another post.

Thank you so much for your research and help......I am not so much concerned with my cholestoral ( my "good" Chol. level is high enough to balance out the "bad").....so I'll live without the Zocor for now....but I am interested in finding out what is hurting my liver functions.....keeping on Verapamil for as long as necessary is more important to me.....until I know that this cycle is done with for real....Been pain free for about 3 days.....

Thanks for addressing all my questions....I have learned a lot from your posts....

Blessings bigtime,
Karen

One side effect of verapimil is increased liver enzymes.  Mine is a horror story, but after about a week on verapimil my liver enzymes sky rocketed and I had all the symptoms of hepatitis.   The dr. said under no circumstance should I take verapimil again.  When the neuro first put me on the stuff he told me they would closely monitor my blood, but I had no idea it could make me that sick.

If you ck the sheet on verapimil it does mention liver function under rare side effects.
