Title: Tiger Balm
Post by bryan_richards on Aug 30th, 2003, 2:05pm
I've had CH's for several years now and I'm just coming down from a rather bad attack of them today.
Over the years I've have found that Tiger Balm has helped me.
I have a rather hot shower first then rub it(Tiger Balm) on the temples, behind the ears and on the back of the neck. Be prepared for a deep heat/burning sensation.
It is rather intense for a few minutes then dies down to a consistant warm feeling that lasts for an hour or so.
If you are not sure, try it on your temple first, you'll not need a lot. rub it in and wait. Oh, don't forget to wash your hands after.........you scratch anything or any part of you......you'll know about it.

Red Tiger Balm or White??

Menthol is in some of the Tiger Balm products.  Several other people have found some relief with menthol inhalers.  Menthol is anti-spasmodic and a local anaesthetic.  Clove oil also has local anaesthetic properties.  Cajuput oil is similar to melaleuca oil, loaded with terpenes that are antiseptic and anti-inflammitory.  Camphor also effects the nerves - camphor was the active ingredient in the 'absinthe' beverages that were banned in Europe after causing a lot of problems.  In small doses applied topically, camphor is not so toxic.

What is more, some people have had results with pepper cream, which basically does the same as Tiger Balm: heating the skin.

A number of people put the Tiger Balm up their noses. Sober, I can't believe they could stand that. In the middle of an attack I am ready to try it myself!

I have been using Tiger Balm for years to help with HAs. It helps at the start of a cycle instead of meds, but after a few weeks when the bigger ones hit it (and OTC meds) becomes useless and only imigran inj works.

I have tried both red and white, and find the white works best for me for HA. I find the red is good for bruises and muscle aches.

By the way, one of the claims made by the manufacturers is that it relieves flatulence. I dread to think what they mean by this  :o do you rub it on the bum hole, this making you afraid to fart?  ;D

Seriously though I have never found a satisfactory answer to how it can help in this windy area .
