Title: Re: Verapamil dosage Post by Orion on Aug 31st, 2003, 7:09pm I had a doctor that was the high dose kind (he is a specialist for ch). I tried something like 720 (3x240) or maybe higher. I became very light headed but I it did seem to cut my cycle time. I am in a new cycle but I am hesitant to return to that level. Of course using zomig or migranol every other day I'm sure has side effects also........... something like a rock and a hard place |

Title: Re: Verapamil dosage Post by LasVegas on Sep 28th, 2003, 11:47pm My Dr just prescribed Verapamil 80 mg once a day. I told him this was the drug of choice as a preventative. He is NOT knowledgeable about CH's, just wrote this script per my request. Not sure how he chose the dosage. I understand it may take a week for my referral to a neuro and while I wait, don't want to be taking the wrong dosage. After reading this post on dosage, I upped it to twice a day, total of 160mg. How do I know if I have been prescribed sustained release or not. Bottle says Verapimil 80 mg (Myla). Is Myla a manufacturer? Anybody w/ suggestions? Thanks in advance. Gregg in Las Vegas, NV |

Title: Re: Verapamil dosage Post by Amber-Artie on Sep 29th, 2003, 9:46am my husband has been on 960 a day of short acting verapamil for a couple of years (480 mg twice a day). His side effects have been constipation and swelling in his ankles. |

Title: Re: Verapamil dosage Post by Bob P on Sep 29th, 2003, 1:47pm Doc Robinson said, at the Vancouver convention, that he has had patients as high as 1080 mg/day. I think his words were, clusterheads have to take it at levels that would give a cardiologist a heart attack! Regular release is suggested by Doc Goadsby as being more effective than sustained release. LasVegas - the regular stuff is usually a plain white round tablet. |

Title: Re: Verapamil dosage Post by Kenzie60 on Sep 29th, 2003, 2:14pm I've been on 480mg of Verapamil, the only side effect I get is constipation and I sometimes I get lightheaded. I did have an abnormal EKG on Friday which they are going to repeat on Tuesday because they want to increase the verapamil. Roseanne |

Title: Re: Verapamil dosage Post by LasVegas on Sep 29th, 2003, 2:57pm I looked at them, they are little white round tablets. One side is blank. The flip side reads MYLAN on the top half, the bottom half reads 512. So does anybody know if this is a manufacturer, MYLAN, and/or any positive/negative details of this manufacturer. I've read on this post that the effectiveness may have something to do with the manufacturer, the dosage and also the type of release. How do I know if it is sustained or regular release? I'm new with Verapamil, have self prescribed the dosage till I see the neuro and not afraid to try anything at this point. |

Title: Re: Verapamil dosage Post by Prense on Sep 29th, 2003, 5:12pm Sustained release will have SR at the end...ie, Verapamil SR 240mg. It would look something like that on the prescription bottle. There are MANY manufacturers of Calan, Verapamil or whatever you want to call it. I too had some light headedness, feeling tired, etc when I first started up on it...all that passed in a little over a month. The constipation is handled very easily with diet. It is nothing to worry much about. |

Title: Re: Verapamil dosage Post by mustang on Sep 29th, 2003, 6:25pm Still on the 640 mil. aday and the only side effects have been constapation [ again whatch your deit] and being tired. The headaches are gone have a shadow now and again the Doc said stay on this dosage untill no shadows. Will go and see a heart Doc. per my primary cause she is having a fit due to dosage. Ihave complete trust in my CH Doc. A Dr. Jones will be writing a medical report on the high dosages of verapamil with treatment in CH and the effects . Will keep you posted as I will be talking to Dr. Jones again next month. :) :) :) :) |

Title: Re: Verapamil dosage Post by celtspirit on Sep 30th, 2003, 6:55pm LasVagas If your script label has the leters CR (controlled release) SR(sustained release) or HS(latin abreviation for 'hours of sleep') on it, the tabs should have a hard, usually different colored coating on them, like a shell. These will be a controlled release form. If you can scratch a little bit of powder from your tabs with just a fingernail, it is the regular stuff. Amazing what thay teach you in college classes, aint it!!! In cycle I am guarranteed 2 CH a day. One an hour after sunset, the other an hour after falling asleep. I take 40mg regular verapamil 1 1/2 hours before sunset, and COVERA-HS 180mg an hour before bedtime. I have been CH free for almost a year for the most part, an ocassional one slips through when I mess around with dosage times, or forget to take the bedtime dose. |

Title: Re: Verapamil dosage Post by dberg99 on Oct 7th, 2003, 3:09pm My doc, Raskin in SF, put me on 120mg x 4, or 480 per day. Kept me CH free for 3 years. He allowed me to go to 600mg per day, all at bedtime, but didn't want me going higher. But now verapimil is not helping, like prednisone and countless other treatments in the past. Raskin was very suprised when it quit working. Said he didin't know of a single case of CH that didn't respond to verapimil. Am going to try the shroom. Hope it is not a temporary fix like all the ones before... |
