Title: I'm New, any take Maxalt?
Post by xercise13 on Aug 8th, 2003, 7:47am
Hello,

Today I am in a lot of pain!  I am also new to the cluster headache diagnosis.  I have hydrocodone (Vicodin) but that is addictive.  Narcotics has been what I have used in the past.  I have a sample of Maxalt.  Has anyone ever tried this?  I am afraid it will make me very nervous and wired like imitrex did.  Please help!

Thank you!

Best I can say is try it and see...narcs is not the best way for sure in my opinion.  For me, maxalt wont touch these bastards, but that's just me.  There are some here who claims it works well.  I think there is a limit to how many you can take per day...40mg maybe??  Other than that, read the precautions and if none apply to you, you should be ok.  If you need specific info on the med, goto RXLIST.com and search for maxalt.

Personally, I'd much rather be wired and nervous than dance with the beast or be addicted to a narc that no longer works because I've has become "used" to it.

I take Maxalt 10mg...and it usually works along with ice gel packs for my head and neck and face (eye) along with oxygen....The disolve in the mouth ones are best as they get to the pain the quickest.....It seems to be the best for me and I don't get nervous.....actually feel pretty normal after the beast is gone and lasts for a while for me anyway....almost a day usually....unless I'm in the worst part of my cycle....then only 1/2 day maybe...
Be blessed and hopefully pain free soon,
Karen

As taken from RXLIST...

Pharmacokinetics

Rizatriptan is completely absorbed following oral administration. The mean oral absolute bioavailability of the MAXALT Tablet is about 45%, and mean peak plasma concentrations (Cmax) are reached in approximately 1-1.5 hours (Tmax). The presence of a migraine headache did not appear to affect the absorption or pharmacokinetics of rizatriptan. Food has no significant effect on the bioavailability of rizatriptan but delays the time to reach peak concentration by an hour. In clinical trials, MAXALT was administered without regard to food. The plasma half-life of rizatriptan in males and females averages 2-3 hours.

The bioavailability and Cmax of rizatriptan were similar following administration of MAXALT Tablets and MAXALT-MLT Orally Disintegrating Tablets, but the rate of absorption is somewhat slower with MAXALT-MLT, with Tmax averaging 1.6-2.5 hours. AUC of rizatriptan is approximately 30% higher in females than in males. No accumulation occurred on multiple dosing. The mean volume of distribution is approximately 140 liters in male subjects and 110 liters in female subjects. Rizatriptan is minimally bound (14%) to plasma proteins.

Now, alot of that is greek to me, but the way that reads to me the Maxalt MLT is absorbed at a slower rate.  This information surprised me when I read it as it sounds backwards considering the MLT is the type that disolves instantly.  I am not a chemist...just thought I would share that.

Chris,

Dr. Bigal did mention at the convention that the Maxalt-MLT's are absorbed slower.  You would think they would be absorbed faster, but they are made for people who have no water available, not quick absorbtion.

as long as its no shots there is nothing that works quick enough for us clusterheads as far as i can see.

I`ll take the liberty to add my "coctail"

This is my coctail

Verapamil Retard 120mgX5-7/daily during cycle 3 weeks after last hit tapering down with 1 verap every 3/4 days until you are on 1 a day.1 a day for another 2 weeks you can decide to quit the verap or take 1 a day.Oxygene alone at 10ltm for 15 minutes or combined with imitrex-shots does miracles. The shots should start working in 6-9minutes.a few seconds after that you are almost painfree
Prednisolone in high doze for 10 days 80mg
then over a 3 weeks periode step down like 70-60-50-40-30-20-10-5mg every 3/4 day
This work fine for me

The very best from Svenn

I've been hurtin' fur 4 weeks now. Saw the doctor for my annual"What the f...is wrong with my head" visit. He gave me 2 sample boxes of Maxalt.(2in each box) said try-em,see if they work  , they did'nt do anything for me. But this weekend my girlfriend and I went to the shore and I took a combination of 'Feverfew',
'Hylands headache' and 'Percogesic' continuisly, "and left the cell phone off/in the truck" :D. got back today and even though the left side of my head is still barking at me I actually was able to help carry stuff in from the truck w/out complaining.   I'm such a gentleman.  8)   maybe the maxalt needed a couple of days to kick in,I don't know. But I do feel better then I did friday.
  I hope this helps,
 Mark

Thank you to all of you who replied.  Suprisingly the Maxalt worked!  However, my head still aches.  Perhaps I am still in the cycle?  I was not nervous like I feared.  I am wondering about adding oxygen?  Seems like a lot of you use it.

These headaches are awful!  I sympathize with all of you.  Narcotics have become very addicting to me to this was a good alternative.

Maxalt took to long for me...  When I had insurance, Imitrex Stadose was my favorite... now I just use O2 and whatever I can get from my doc out of her "freebe" box.  Oxygen work great!!!  you outta get ya some.
