Title: ? for Europeans not C/H
Post by forgetfulnot on Aug 3rd, 2003, 12:47pm
Anyone have experience with a drug called SAM-e? It is sort of new in the US and is supposed to be good for depression and liver problems. It was discovered in Italy around 40 years ago.

I've searched for S-adenosylmethionine (SAM-e) in the Swiss Pharmaceutical Compendium, but didn't find anything.

No wonder, a  Google search for SAM-e (http://www.google.com/search?as_q=&num=50&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&btnG=Google+Search&as_epq=SAM+e&as_oq=&as_eq=&lr=&as_ft=i&as_filetype=&as_qdr=all&as_occt=any&as_dt=i&as_sitesearch=&safe=off) brings up thousands of hits, mostly from the food supplement fraternity. Reading "Coral Calcium | Sam-e | Noni" in an advertisement hints on its rating in the "alternative" medication business.

However, there are a few more serious sites, like http://www.geriatrictimes.com/g010923.html. I suggest you comb through the Google results for URL's from reputable organisations and universities.

Look here. (http://www.docguide.com/news/content.nsf/SearchResults?openform&Query=S-adenosylmethionine&so=date&id=239FCA8DF4C3101685256C6D0019E3C3)
Quite a bit of information to wade through, I hope some of it is useful.

Title: SAM-E, Serotonin, Melatonin
Post by floridian on Aug 4th, 2003, 9:48am
No research on S-adenosylmethionine and clusters that I have heard of, but there is a lot of research on PubMed.  SAM-e improves serotonin synthesis in some people, and is tied into the melatonin and circadian cycles. It can also be beneficial for the liver and cartilage.
