Title: Prednisone
Post by cmbetts on Jul 16th, 2003, 3:57am
Hi,

Has anyone here taken prdnisone for longer than 2 weeks.  I just finished my 2 week dosage.  All PFDs!!  However, it's only day 2 without prednisone and here I am at 3 in the morning recuperating from a nasty one.  Any advice?

Pred works quickly to stop a cycle but the attacks return when you stop it.

Your doc should have started you on one of the preventive meds at the same time that you started the Pred. It usually takes several weeks for the preventives to start working.

Hi there

This is my coctail

Verapamil Retard 120mgX5-7/daily during cycle 3 weeks after last hit tapering down with 1 verap every 3/4 days until you are on 1 a day.1 a day for another 2 weeks you can decide to quit the verap or take 1 a day.Oxygene alone at 10ltm for 15 minutes or combined with imitrex-shots does miracles. The shots should start working in 6-9minutes.a few seconds after that you are almost painfree
Prednisolone in high doze for 10 days 80mg
then over a 3 weeks periode step down like 70-60-50-40-30-20-10-5mg every 3/4 day
This work fine for me

The very best from Svenn

I usually start at 60-80mg per week and taper weekly

ie 80,50,40,30,2

As Bob said, you need something else to help as a preventative, 2 weeks on prednisone alone isn't going to stop them.

...For 2+ years I have gradually ramped to 480 Verap in the morning and 240 at night. During that time I have been virtually painfree. The few times I began to get shadows and slight CH I would request and receive a dosage increase. Each time that would completely eliminate all shadows even. Any  precursors or hints of pain that tried to break thru were easily aborted with O2 while exercising and/or midrin and/or Zomig.

Here lately, as the beast began more frequent slight breakthroughs, it looked like I was due for another Vera increase ...which doesn't appeal to me cause I didn't want to have to get to this large a daily dosage....as fate would have it...... I am being treated for a trauma injury to my elbow, lot of paresthesias (pins and needles) in forearm and hand, they sent me to a neurologist. He put me on a 3 week Prednisone taper starting at 60. Sooooo I figured ...hey lots of folks at CH.Com use Pred as a cycle buster....soooo I shouldn't need the Vera upage yet. NOW on the second day of Pred. I have been hit MORE fuckin times than any day in the past 2+ years...coincidental? Is the Pred. actually causing more hits? For research sake I still want to delay uppin the Vera ...butt I am not a happy camper.

With all this Vera and Pred I hesitate to add more heavy meds like my Midrin or Zomig....I'm emptying my O2 rapidly as I run in place, using apple cider vinegar rub downs, saline nose spray, Lidocaine drops etc. I'm pullin out all my alternative tricks. I wish I could do Charlie's fuckin blood flow trick!

ANYWAY ...to make a short story long...I'll be anxious to see the days pass on this Pred crap and hope it's mojo starts workin.

good grief

I've been on vacation for about a week and just got back to reading the posts. I started an unusual cycle just before my vacation. I've never had CH's this early in the season - mostly Fall. I spent the week outta state at my parents and was convinced by my loving and worrisome mother to go see my childhood general practitioner. Since it had been 20 years he was hard-pressed to do anything drastic on such short a visit BUT he did prescribe me some Prednisone. That is the first time for me. No one has ever suggested it to me before. I've been taking 60mg (20mg-3 times/day). He only gave me enough to get through to the end of my vacation (today). It had a sucess rate of only 50% in the first 4 days. The first night was wonderfully pain free and then the second night SUCKED! I remember sitting there thinking that these CH's were dastardly to have figured out a way around the med that quickly! Although I'm up to about 80% pain free now. I've not taken anything else with the Pred. I detect some shadows but nothing severe. I'm dreading tomorrow when I run out. I'm not sure I can get in to see my Primary care physician soon enough to get another prescription. My old doc mentioned Verapamil but I will have to explore that more here at home. Since I'm a smoker he doesn't think Imitrex is a good solution. Has anyone tried Claritin? It is weird but I swear my whole head starts to get real stuffy in the evening when the CH's start to hit. It feels like if I were to just get my head sucked out I would be okay. Some evenings I would stand out in the cool evening air and feel like I would get some relief - at least keep the sweats down to just a dampness. I know the cigarettes sound stupid but I was shocked at the survey's 50% smoker versus non-smoker. For me it is like the nicotene head rush after an episode that reminds me of just having had sex (or more politely, that after dessert cigarette that makes a good meal - fantastic). All that hard work during an episode takes alot out of a guy.

I get 8-12 week cycles and my cure has been 40mg pred (4 10mg tabs)  for 8-12 weeks and 4 2mg Sanserts.  Worked for 15 years and now the IDIOTS at Sandoz put sansert out of production.  I have 20 left from an expired batch from 2 years ago.  I could use some advice myself!
