Hi Kids.
My name is Doug and I have suffered from cluster headaches
since I was 18, I'm now 42. I was just watching a local news report on the use of botox injections to treat migrane headaches. Has anyone heard of this or have any information ? I have found ony 1 effective symptom releaving treatment for my headaches and that is oxygen. As a preventative I have had good results with prednizone, but
it takes up to 2 weeks to work. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

There is lots of info in the archives on botox if you do a search for it. I had it done last Nov. It did nothing for my clusters.

Only one thing I find strange about your report. Prednisone is considered by most doctors (and CH sufferers) to be the "gold standard" of anti-inflammatories. If it's going to work, it usually works immediately (within 24 hours of the first high dose, usually 60-80 mg). I've never heard of prednisone taking a couple of weeks to work. Other drugs, like verapamil for example, need some time to build up in the system before they become effective.

When I begin a regimen of prophylactic meds, it's always prednisone and verapamil together. I begin to taper off the prednisone after about a week once the verapamil has had a chance to build up and become effective.

I tried it a couple of years ago, and while it helped with accompanying neck pain, it didn't diminish the cluster pain any. They did several injections in the forehead and several in the back of the neck, near the base of my skull. Insurance paid for the Botox, but the Doctor appointment and injection were out of pocket.

It did smooth out the crease in my forehead for about three months though! :)
