Svenn: this should answer most of your questions.....please note that *we* CHeads get relief in 15-20 minutes..... and probably only *huff* up to max. 5-8 times a day... problems are noted in constant, long-term use....which we, hopefully, don't have to do..... hope this helps!

that link pretty much explains it all, but at the same time doesnt say shit. here are 2 opinions i got from 2 different respratory therapists. the first one told me that using my o2 too much (im on 8 liters for 15 min per attack) will cause you problems. short version, he said if you get that much pure o2 in your blood it causes your brain to say "wow look at all the oxygen, better shut off the lungs!" and send you into a nice comfortable coma.
my second R.T. told me that the first guy was full of shit and that when your on 7 liters or more through a full face mask your at no risk of carbon mionxide poisioning so go ahead and suck on the tank all you want. I tend to believe the second guy considering my attacks have gotten worse since i first got on the o2 and now im on it as long as 1 1/2 hours at a time untill the attack goes away. personally, i think your safe, but if your worried, check with a R.T. for yourself. if you get a different story than i did, let me know. good luck!

Nathan,
I also think the first therapist is full of crap.

If that were the case then there would be a lot of clusterheads in a coma.

I just started O2 two weeks ago and at 4L per minute with the ImPulse regulator and it gets rid of my headaches in 15-25 minutes. Sofar it is wonderful although I only need to use it twice per day luckily. Even if side effects come up I dont know if they could possibly be worse than the headaches so until I can cut through the V.A. red tape and get imitrex for free Im sticking with it  :)

I am a Respiratory Therapist, for over 25 years and the first Therapist is full of crap. For those of you without Pulmonary problems such as COPD (Co2 retainers) you have no worry your main stimulis to breathe is to rid the body of Co2 not because you are low on O2.
Co2 retainers have a high Co2, so their central chemoreceptors are burned out due to the high Co2 content in their blood and they rely on their Peripheral Chemoreceptors, their main stimulis is low O2.
When they breathe high concentration of oxygen their Pheripheral receptors kick off due to the high o2 content.
In normal healthy lungs you do not need to worry about this. The only draw back for heakthy folks is that 100% O2 will wash out the nitrgen in the lungs but that takes a long time to do over 24 hours of continues use.
With people Known as Co2 retainers too much O2 can kill them, their oxygen needs as satisfied so the receptors quit and the person slowly stops breathing and as he goes to sleep his Co2 goes higher and higher till they die in their sleep.

Hope this clears it up for you guys and gals

Short and simple.... everything we clusterheads use are dangerous to some extent.  It would be a lot healthier if we didn't have the h/a's at all.  Oxygen is by far the safest of any of the other treatments.  Triptans can, and have killed a small number of ppl.  My first choice has always been O2 and have been using it for over 6 years now.  1 1/2 - 2 hrs at times.  Still alive and have no problems related to use of O2.

Quoting from the textbook of pathophysiology:

Breathing 100% pure oxygen under normal atmospheric pressure causes  a  r e v e r s i b l e  increase of the alveolar resistance with a decrease of the CO2 diffusion capacity  o n l y  after at least 24 hours of uninterrupted breathing of pure oxygen - it means:

Breathing pure oxygen  u n i n t e r r u p t e d l y  you record a  slight and  r e v e r s i b l e  damage of the lung tissue only after the a.m. time !

PFDAN to everybody !       Thomas
