Title: HOPS
Post by Shellie on Apr 19th, 2003, 9:17am

I just recently went on vacation, and a friend swore that i needed to see this "Naturalist"...??? Well, after suffering chronically for 14 years, I was a bit apprehensive, but thought "what the heck....it couldnt hurt". He evaluated me and said he would call me In Arizona (my home) within 2 days...he wanted to do some research. He did indeed call...long distance, I might add...he was quite intrigued!!! He suggested I go to the health food store or GNC or wherever and pick up a bottle of "Hops", they come in capsule form, and for 100 of them they were about $4.00. He suggested take 2 in the a.m. and 2 in the p.m. and if within 2 weeks my h/a's werent GONE or dramatically decreased, to call him and (DONT FREAK OUT EVERYONE) he was gonna do a "spiritual cleansing" (now thats something I've never had cleansed...lol) But I'll keep you all posted. And a farce......maybe~~ But, alot of you have been chronic sufferer's or even if you havent, CH's are the most ruthless, horrendous thing I've ever dealt with! I've posted on and off of this board for years....so I'm not  "newbie", I'm what you could call a veteran, and not proud of it! :(  But anything that might help any of us, I've always been willing to pass on. But to the newbie's(thats a funny word ;) )....This is by far the best website for info. and support. Hang in there and thanks to all of you for your years of love and encouragement!!

Are we talking about humulus lupulus, the same thing that gives its bittering, aroma, and preservative qualities to beer?

I have tried hops, garlic, mega doses of vitamin C
colonics, massage...all in an effort to win over pain..
then one day on the golf course, a friend of mine
gave me a non prescrip called "Mygrex"
you cant get it in stores, but I have ordered online
at  http://www.otisclapp.com
I have recommended to many and some have had great
results like me, some not, but worth a try

Shellie,
I prefer the kind hops where the capsule serves to close the bottle. But whether the hop comes in a beer bottle or in a gelatin capsule, it is just a mild sedative, that may let you sleep a little better. In no way can it in 2 weeks dramatically decrease or even eliminate cluster headaches. Give me a break, do you really believe that this witch doctor has found a sensational new use of this widely used herb? A "spiritual cleansing", whatever it is, might free you from the guilt of pinching some cookies from mom a long time ago, but exorcize the cluster demon with some spiritual wishy-washy, oh please. If all this fails, what will be your next step? Going to the Philippines where ghost healers reach into the body, pull out a diseased organ and put it back after clean(s)ing, all without the slightest discomfort or injury for the patient? Remember to tell him that in your case it's the hypothalamus that needs adjustments.

paulR,
Do you really believe that a OTC "occupational medication" for "advanced headache pain" can put a dent in a CH attack? Even if Mygrex "provides 40% more pain relief than Extra-Strength Tylenol" it is still just another mix of Acetaminophen, Phenylephrine and Caffeine, and therefore utterly useless against clusters. You write: "I have recommended to many and some have had great results like me". Does this mean, you know many people with cluster headaches and there are many success stories for this miracle cure "Mygrex"? How come we haven't heard of it yet? I wish you further success in treating your tension headaches. ;D

Shellie writes: "This is by far the best website for info." I agree with that, and I try to keep it that way, by debunking all bogus "cures" and ridiculous claims.

Ueli

You have no right to use the birch rods on people just because you dont agree with something they say.  You must have come from a deprived family and perhaps you just like 'being uncurable' or perhaps you just lack sensitivity?! >:(

I happen to agree with Cleon......Ueli, you are exactly why I stopped participating in and on this board! Why do people like you have to be so cruel and totally disregarding of other people?? Don't we all suffer enough without putting up with the likes of someone like you???
AGAIN, I'll say....D.J., you've done an excellent job with all the changes that have occurred with the "sight" of the site......but as for the people, I see they (not everyone...please dont asume I'm judging all...or even euli for that matter) not alot has changed......so sad to say! And Ueli, it's people like you that cause tension headaches........what a shame! :-/

Shellie - You never answered my question. Are we talking about regular old hops here? You used quotation marks in your original post, so I was thinking that "hops" meant something other than the garden variety beer ingredient. I just want to make sure I understand what it is that this guy recommended you take. Thanks.

Cleon asked if I like 'being uncurable'. Certainly not, but in contrast to Shellie and Cleon I have accepted that there is no cure (yet) for CH. I am of the firm conviction that if there ever will be a cure, it will be found by painstaking research from the medical community, and not from a snake oil pedlar of any shade who smells yet another sucker.

Shellie, why must you be so cruel to totally disregard any common sense? After all, we are writing the year 2003 A.C., and there has been made a lot progress in medical knowledge (and any other field of science) since the archaic times when people believed in good and evil spirits and feared to fall off the earth if their ship got to close to the horizon.

I am still hanging around here after more than 4 years is because I want to help other sufferers to find the best treatment. But even more, I want to warn people from any scam artist that adds CH to the broad spectrum he can already treat (usually ranging from dyslexia to lung cancer, from backpain to AIDS).
But if somebody comes up with some archaic superstition, like cleansing of spiritual toxins or the magic power of Boji stones, she/he must be prepared to feel my full scorn.

Shellie, if I'm causing you tension headaches, why don't you try Mygrex, it is specially designed for "advanced headache pain" and provides 40% more pain relief than Extra-Strength Tylenol.

You just like being sarcastic
-  and also just because you have decided that there is no cure for CH's doesnt mean that everyone else has to follow what think.
As for spiritual cleansing and liver and kidney cleansing - these have been around for years and if you dont know anything about them I suggest you take the blinkers off.
There have been many stories of such success 's.
I suggest you dont even accept that Naturopaths have amazing success with cleansing and special diets?!

Bill,
It's just Hops that come in a capsule form. I know not one thing about it, other than what the ~Witch Dr.~ advised!! LOL....
Sorry I don't know more about it...I've never been a beer drinker so as far as the hops are concerned, I'm not sure of garden variety or any other kind. Thanks for your inquiry..... :D

Ueli,
May the Lord hold his protecting hand over you.....it seems as if you need it! And as for feeling YOUR SCORN.....your what 61...I'm 37.....your like dealing with a child. Please dont waste anymore of any of our time replying to my posts.
Thank You,
Shellie
**With all of your knowledge, maybe you should became an expert in the CH field....you've suffered how long....4 years??? I'm sorry for you(sincerely), but come back and talk to ME in about 10 more, and then lets see how willing you are to try just about anything.

Thanks, Shellie! That's what I wanted to know. I am, for the first time, growing my own hops starting this year, but with the express purpose of utilizing the coneflowers in a more traditional way - homebrewing. I can't imagine what hops tea might taste like, but I might just give it a try.

How could we assume you are judging people.  Gee, your posts sound so nice.  I have never found Ueli to cause a tension headache.....in fact, just the opposite.  He helps many people fix their headaches.

Hate to break the news to you Shellie.....but he is our resident expert.  Long as I've been here, I've never known him to be wrong.  If I was you.....I would really try to not sound so superior.  When you've been here four years and helped numerous people....then you can sound superior.  Until then, I would keep my mouth shut.

Liver and Kidney cleansing may do something, but its funny it has never shown up in the archives as a SUCCESSFUL route.

Spiritual Cleansing?     I'm not even going to fucking comment on that one, other than to say thats the 2nd most ridiculous thing I've heard here in a long time.    :o >:( ::)

Shellie, I hope that you continue to read here and I really hope that you have some degree of success with whatever route you decide to take.

Subthread: Topic---Ueli

I for one appreciate a guy that doesn't bite his tongue and hide behind garbage medicine--of which there's a plethora--to weed out the untrue and opportunistic in our midst. Remember, it's a shmorgasboard--take what you like and leave the rest.

Desperate people (of which in many ways we are) are preyed upon by ridiculous and unscrupulous medicine every day. We need some hard data or something more compelling than that lone chiropractor who'll crack your back and swear it resets the suprachiasmatic membrane.

Hey, we're all on the same side.

Hey Grant you obviously have a lot more to learn about people - you and a lot of people involved in this topic.

Its OK to have a strong opion regarding one's high and mighty attitude, but its not OK for someone to put people down in an insensitve and rude manner.
A lot of lessons here to be learnt I'm afraid.

Thank God someone in particular is not a teacher  - the pupils would be crusified.  Not allowed to have an opinion at all and if they have got one  -they are in deep shit - what a control freak!  Got nothing better to do with his time than jump on heads that are already sore.  Lacks diplomacy and sensitivity and has an attitude.

I do not agree with Ueli on everything or anyone else for that matter.....however......his methods and processes are sound and his information can be confirmed. And if you think he was hard on you.....nahh, he is a sweetheart, with a brain. If anything Ueli or anyone else says to you causes so much pain how do you stand a CH attack? I promise there aint a damn thing any of you could say to make me give up my seat here.....I paid for it a thousand times over....in pain.

Dont be such wimps........ya gotta be tough with CH!

Hi All,

I am a long-time visitor to CH.Com, and though I do not post much anymore, I couldn't in good conscience, not reply to this post and all the rudeness that followed.

I personally know Shellie and met her on this board close to four years ago. I know her and her story well, and without revealing any confidences I will say that she has the most intractable cluster headaches of any person that I've seen here.  She is chronic (every day kinda chronic for 14 years), has tried every available treatment from A - Z without much success, and was determined disabled by the state of Arizona (because of cluster headaches!!)

Though I've suffered from CHs for 16 years, I am not chronic, and don't know if I could have withstood living with them every day and not having any meds or treatment work for longer than a week or two.

Lots of people here are "experts" and have an opinion, and that's ok with me, but it seems to me that sometimes having an open mind and showing a little more compassion & kindness would go a long way in the end.

In my opinion, a little "Spiritual Healing" would really help some that reside on this message board. :-[

We’re not being cruel, nasty, or insensitive. We’re trying to help others to keep their eyes on the ball. When we’re afflicted with a horror such as this, we can become susceptible to all kinds of alternative and even dangerous cranks and crackpot wishful thinking. Believe me, if there were some kind of herbal or organic miracle that would do something for clusters, we’d be all over it like shit on Velcro.

Believe me. If you want some relief, you’ll get it by finding a good doctor. Good ones are on your side and are just as anxious to kill this thing as we. The cranky old neurologist who came up with the circulatory technique I post all the time, wasn’t a crank. He made a point of telling me it wasn’t a miracle. It also cost nothing. The common thread among these alternative therapies is a price tag, often a hefty one. They are also huge wastes of time. Do yourselves a favor and spend this energy finding competent medical help.  Ueli wasn’t being nasty, he was
trying to help you use critical thinking. It’s what he does best.

Keep up the good fight.
