Met a new aquaintance last week, who has had clusters for years, plus severe back pain. A few weeks ago his usual cycle hit and his back pain also kicked in, so he used his usual anti - inflamitary tab -CELEBREX (for his back pain) and he was amazed to find that his CH attacks deminished to a 2/10. Sounds like it might be worth a try?!! :o

NSAID's (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) are useful for the treatment of CPH. The first choice there is Indomethacin (Indocin), but some cannot tolerate it because it's heavy on the stomach. For them another NSAID can often help: Celecoxib (Celebrex), and I know a few who had success with it.
For CH the NSAID's are not often used, but some people are helped by them. Jonny used Indo bullets as abortive, until the were discontinued.

Indocin, Celebrex and Viox all helped me until all three of them got as Ueli put it heavy on my stomach.

They where all prescribed to treat my daily hemicrania continua HA and by getting that piece contolled my clusters eased off a bit.

Do we know if it is possible to have Clusters at night and CPH during th day? And what does CPH stand for? Thanks

Interesting comparison......

CPH duration of 2-45 minutes, 5+ hits per day mostly
CH duration 15-180 minutes with 1-8 hits per day

Looks like considerable overlap. Then the note at the bottom says that Indo is not absolute

The only differentiating feature is CPH = over 5 hits per day, more than 50% of the time. I wonder what criteria was "slightly altered".

Cleon,

The problem with anti-inflammatories, or any pills for Cluster Headache, is by the time the pill is broken down and in the bloodstream, the headache is over. Hence...why a lot of people assume the pill is helping. Not to scare anyone...but anti-inflammatories are also somewhat dangerous due to potential G.I problems.

I use a pill for times when I can't use my trex...and the only good thing about Clusters is they tend to arrive at the same times. So, when I know one will be arriving soon, then I take the pill. It's important to try to take pain meds before the pain becomes too intense.

You are absolutely correct re: GI issues. Anti inflammatories are really not good at all for cluster. Where they help is with variations of CDH.

Even with that I will not use anymore because of long term use and affect on GI track.

Indocin almost elimnated my CDH. Only one problem. I felt like I had morning sickness every day and the last time I checked the associated condition is imposible for me to have.

Also. anti -inflamitries are best used as a preventative, by using a small dose every day. They definently help with my daytime attacks, but those night ones are still devistating.

I've found that ibuprofen (the anti inflammetry) and codeine work ok for me. Nothing amazing but takes the edge off. In Australia the combo comes as Nurofen Plus, but I don't know if you guys have it over there :) Best of luck!
