Title: Amerge
Post by alann on Apr 4th, 2003, 7:19pm
I'm episodic and have just entered my annual fray with the Beast. For the first time in about 10 years my Pred (60mg)/Verap(240mg) is not shutting the CHs down though I'm getting them only every 36 hours and theyre only 8s (traditionally I'm blessed with 9-10s). Going thru quite a few imitrex needles and wondering if perhaps "Amerge" ("Emerge"?)would help. I used it once a few years ago, but know nothing about it. I'm thinking that as these are not "10s" I can save a few Imitrex needles and diversify my painkillers.

Can anyone give me feedback on this drug or other suggestions (O2 doesnt work for me) for painkillers other than Trex.?

Thank-you, and I wish you all a painfree friday night.

Alan

I have not had a whole lot of luck with Amerge, but needless to say, nothing else works either.

I had a '10' at about 4:30 p today.  Took an Amerge and It was literally an hour+ before it went away.  I tried the new 'Frova' too.  My opinion is they all take way too long, but what choice other than ER do you have.  I take 750 Vicodin and an Amerge and wait it out.

The other am I didn't have anything and I knew it was going to be bad, so I headed right to ER.  GOSH!!  have I finally made an impression on them after 20 yrs.  I got relief nearly immediately.  PRAISE GOD.

Amerge helped me for a few days in the following manner. I was getting 2-4 headaches a night, when I started the amerge. I would take one in the morning and 1 before bed (neurologist's suggestion). While considered an abortive, and not a preventative, Amerge has a relatively long duration of effect. I was pain free the first 3 days, had 1 headache @ 5am the next couple of days, and it seemed to stop having any effectiveness with subsequent usage.
Running/jogging has always almost always aborted an attack for me before a tablet would take effect, so I cannot attest to its value as an abortive.
In fact, I still have 10 Amerge left, that I will never use. Whatever shall I do with them?

I took 1mg (?) amerge with 50mg imitrex when my first ch of the nite hit at 10p.  Then I would skip the 2am hit and go straight to the 6am hit.  However, I found that I started getting hit awhole lot during the day.  Not sure that it had anything to do with the amerge/imitrex but you never know.

Good luck.  Wishing you all PFDAN always, Linda T.

Some Neuro's are now using Amerge and Zoemig as preventatives in low dose prescriptions at night.

Neither worked for me but is worth asking since everyones tolerance and acceptance of triptans is different.

Zoemig helps my wife while Maxalt or Amerge help my daughter for what it is worth.
